House Overview
Slytherin House values ambition, cunning, leadership, and resourcefulness. Founded by Salazar Slytherin, the house has produced more Dark wizards than any other, but also many great witches and wizards who used their ambition for good. Slytherin is known for its strong sense of self-preservation and the belief that the ends justify the means.

Founder: Salazar Slytherin
Salazar Slytherin was one of the four founders of Hogwarts, described as a "gaunt" man. He was a Parselmouth (able to speak to snakes) and believed strongly in blood purity - wanting Hogwarts to accept only pure-blood students. This led to a falling out with the other founders, particularly Godric Gryffindor.
Before leaving Hogwarts, Slytherin built the Chamber of Secrets, a hidden chamber deep beneath the school containing a Basilisk. He intended it to be opened by his heir to purge the school of those he deemed unworthy (Muggle-borns). The Chamber was opened twice: once by Tom Riddle in 1943 and again by Riddle's diary-memory possessing Ginny Weasley in 1993.
His most famous artifact is Salazar Slytherin's locket, a gold locket with an ornate "S" in green serpents. It became one of Voldemort's Horcruxes and was eventually destroyed by Ron Weasley using the Sword of Gryffindor.
The Slytherin Common Room
The Slytherin common room is located in the dungeons of Hogwarts, beneath the Black Lake. The entrance is concealed in a stone wall and opened by speaking the correct password.
Description:
- ๐ Dungeon location with greenish light filtering through windows into the lake
- ๐ Low ceiling with elaborate lamps hanging from chains
- ๐ช Skulls and dark, ornate furniture
- ๐ฅ Carved mantelpiece with elaborate decorations
- ๐ Windows look into the lake - occasionally see the giant squid swim past
- ๐ Green and silver color scheme throughout
- โ๏ธ Cool and shadowy atmosphere
The common room has a secretive, exclusive atmosphere that reinforces the house's selective nature and sense of superiority.
House Ghost: The Bloody Baron
The Bloody Baron is the Slytherin house ghost, a gaunt, silent specter covered in silver bloodstains. He is the most feared ghost at Hogwarts - even the mischievous Peeves respects and fears him.
The Baron's backstory is tragic: He was in love with Helena Ravenclaw (the Grey Lady), daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw. When Helena stole her mother's diadem and fled, Rowena sent the Baron to find her. He tracked her to Albania, but when she refused to return with him, he killed her in a rage. Devastated by what he'd done, he killed himself with the same weapon, which is why he's covered in blood for eternity.

Slytherin's Locket
๐ฟ Salazar Slytherin's Locket ๐ฟ
A heavy golden locket with an ornate "S" in glittering green serpents. Originally belonged to Salazar Slytherin and passed down through his descendants.
History:
- ๐ Owned by the Gaunt family (Voldemort's mother's family)
- ๐ Stolen by Tom Riddle from his uncle Morfin Gaunt
- ๐ฎ Turned into a Horcrux by Voldemort after murdering a Muggle tramp
- ๐ฐ Hidden in a cave with Inferi guarding it
- ๐ Retrieved by Dumbledore and Harry (but was a fake - R.A.B. took the real one)
- โก Real locket found at Grimmauld Place (Kreacher had it)
- โ๏ธ Destroyed by Ron Weasley using the Sword of Gryffindor
The locket had corrupting properties even before becoming a Horcrux. As a Horcrux, it amplified negative emotions, particularly affecting Ron when he wore it.
The Chamber of Secrets
Salazar Slytherin's greatest and darkest legacy at Hogwarts.
Construction (circa 990s)
Slytherin built the Chamber before leaving Hogwarts. He placed a Basilisk inside - a serpent that would obey only his heir, the Parselmouth.
First Opening (1943)
Tom Riddle, heir of Slytherin, opened the Chamber. The Basilisk killed Moaning Myrtle. Riddle framed Hagrid and his "monster" (Aragog the Acromantula).
Second Opening (1992-1993)
Tom Riddle's diary-memory possessed Ginny Weasley, forcing her to open the Chamber. Multiple students petrified. Harry defeated the Basilisk and destroyed the diary.
Chamber Description:
- ๐ช Entrance in Moaning Myrtle's bathroom (girls' second floor)
- ๐ Opened by speaking Parseltongue: "Open up"
- ๐ชจ Long descent through dark tunnels
- โ๏ธ Main chamber with giant stone serpent statues
- ๐ฟ Enormous statue of Salazar Slytherin's face
- ๐ Basilisk emerged from the mouth of the statue
Slytherin vs. Gryffindor Rivalry
The rivalry between Slytherin and Gryffindor dates back to the founders themselves. This manifests in:
- โ๏ธ Quidditch: Intense matches, often with dirty tactics from Slytherin
- ๐ House Cup: Constant competition for points
- ๐ Classes: Particularly in Potions when Snape favored Slytherin
- ๐ญ Social: Mutual distrust and antagonism between students
- โก Philosophical: Different values - courage vs. cunning, idealism vs. pragmatism
The Sorting Hat's Song
"Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means
To achieve their ends."
Redemption and Complexity
While Slytherin produced many dark wizards, the series shows that Slytherins are complex individuals capable of bravery, sacrifice, and redemption:
- ๐ Severus Snape protected Harry despite personal hatred, motivated by love
- ๐ Regulus Black defied Voldemort and died trying to destroy a Horcrux
- ๐ Narcissa Malfoy lied to Voldemort to protect her son
- ๐ Horace Slughorn fought in the Battle of Hogwarts despite his self-preservation instinct
- ๐ Draco Malfoy couldn't kill Dumbledore and later didn't identify Harry at Malfoy Manor
"Slytherin will help you on your way to greatness." - The Sorting Hat
