Chapter-by-Chapter Guide

Book 4 marks a major turning point in the series. The Triwizard Tournament brings international competition, but also danger as Voldemort's plan unfolds. This is the longest book in the early series and where the tone becomes significantly darker.

The Riddle House

Setting: Little Hangleton, 50 years ago and present day

Date: August 1994

Key Events:

  • Riddle House backstory: wealthy family murdered 50 years ago
  • Frank Bryce (gardener) was blamed but never charged
  • Present day: Frank investigates light in the abandoned house
  • Overhears Voldemort (in rudimentary body) plotting with Wormtail and another servant

  • Harry wakes from nightmare with his scar hurting

Chapters 2-7: The Burrow & The World Cup

Chapter 2 - The Scar: Harry writes to Sirius about his scar pain and dream. Dursleys terrified by letter delivered by Fred, George, and Ron via Floo powder (blocking fireplace).
