True Allegiance

Severus Snape is perhaps the most complex character in the Harry Potter series. For six books, he appears to be a cruel, petty man who hates Harry Potter. The final reveal in The Deathly Hallows transforms our understanding completely: Snape was Dumbledore's man all along, motivated by his eternal love for Lily Potter.

Early Life (1960-1971)

January 9, 1960

Birth

Born to Tobias Snape (Muggle) and Eileen Prince (witch) in the poor mill town of Cokeworth. Unhappy childhood in an abusive household. Father was violent; mother was cowed.

~1969

Meeting Lily Evans

Nine-year-old Severus discovers Lily Evans, a Muggle-born witch from the same town. He tells her about magic. They become close friends. Severus is in love with her, though she sees him as a friend.

1971

Hogwarts - Sorted into Slytherin

Severus and Lily both go to Hogwarts. He's sorted into Slytherin, she into Gryffindor. This begins the division between them. Severus falls in with future Death Eaters (Mulciber, Avery). Lily becomes friends with James Potter's group.

Hogwarts Years (1971-1978)

The Marauders vs. Snape

James Potter and Sirius Black relentlessly bullied Snape throughout school. They called him "Snivellus" and publicly humiliated him. Snape hated them with a passion and gave as good as he got when he could.

Key Incidents:

  • The Werewolf Incident (Year 5): Sirius told Snape how to get past the Whomping Willow when Remus Lupin was transformed. Snape nearly died; James saved him at the last second. Dumbledore swore Snape to secrecy. Snape felt he owed James a life-debt but resented it.
  • Snape's Worst Memory (Year 5): After O.W.L. exams, James and Sirius attacked Snape by the lake, levitating him upside-down, exposing his underwear. When Lily defended him, Snape lashed out in humiliation and called her a "Mudblood." She ended their friendship.
Year 6-7

The Half-Blood Prince

Snape excelled at Potions and invented many spells, both helpful and dark. He annotated his Potions textbook with improvements and created spells like Levicorpus, Muffliato, and Sectumsempra (a dark cutting curse). He called himself "The Half-Blood Prince" (mother's maiden name was Prince).

Year 7

Losing Lily

Despite multiple attempts to apologize, Lily refused to forgive the "Mudblood" slur. She began dating James Potter (who had matured). Snape, bitter and rejected, graduated and fully embraced the Dark Arts.

Death Eater Years (1978-1981)

~1978

Joining Voldemort

Snape joined the Death Eaters, attracted by power and dark magic. He participated in Voldemort's reign of terror during the First Wizarding War.

~1980

The Prophecy

Snape overheard part of Trelawney's prophecy about a child born at the end of July who would defeat Voldemort. He reported it to Voldemort. When he realized Voldemort interpreted it to mean Lily Potter's son, Snape was horrified.

1981

Turning to Dumbledore

Desperate to save Lily, Snape went to Dumbledore and begged him to protect the Potters. Dumbledore agreed, but demanded Snape's loyalty in return. Snape agreed to anything. When Dumbledore asked what he would give in return, Snape replied: "Anything."

October 31, 1981

Lily's Death

Despite Dumbledore's protection and Snape's defection, Lily was murdered by Voldemort (due to Peter Pettigrew's betrayal). Snape was devastated. He went to Godric's Hollow and cradled her body, weeping. From that moment, his life's purpose became protecting her son - even though Harry was James's child too.

Professor Snape (1981-1997)

Potions Master

Brilliant at Potions but a terrible, cruel teacher who played favorites with Slytherins. Terrorized students, especially Neville. Made Harry's life miserable because Harry reminded him of James.

Head of Slytherin

Protected Slytherin students (including Draco Malfoy). Biased against other houses. Used his position to maintain cover as reformed Death Eater.

Secret Protector

Despite his cruelty, Snape constantly protected Harry: saved him from Quirrell's curse, refereed Quidditch match, brewed Wolfsbane for Lupin, tried to teach Harry Occlumency.

Dumbledore's Spy

Risked his life as double agent. Provided intelligence to Dumbledore about Death Eaters. Master of Occlumency - Voldemort never discovered his betrayal.

1991-1992

Harry's First Year

Snape immediately hated Harry for looking like James but having Lily's eyes. During Quidditch match, counteracted Quirrell's jinx on Harry's broom while everyone thought he was cursing it. Protected the Philosopher's Stone.

1993-1994

Lupin and Black Return

Forced to work with Remus Lupin (old enemy). Brewed Wolfsbane Potion monthly for him. When Sirius Black escaped, Snape desperately wanted to see him caught - his chance at revenge. Confronted Sirius and Lupin in the Shrieking Shack but was stunned.

1994-1995

Voldemort Returns

When Voldemort returned, Dumbledore sent Snape back to play double agent - the most dangerous mission possible. Snape returned to the Death Eaters, claiming he'd been spying on Dumbledore all along.

1995-1996

Occlumency Lessons

Dumbledore ordered Snape to teach Harry Occlumency to block his mental connection to Voldemort. The lessons were disasters - Harry saw Snape's worst memories, and Snape's hatred of James made it impossible to connect with Harry. Lessons ended when Harry invaded Snape's Pensieve.

1996

The Unbreakable Vow

Narcissa Malfoy made Snape swear an Unbreakable Vow to protect Draco and complete his mission if he failed. Snape agreed - knowing Draco's mission was to kill Dumbledore.

The Climax (1996-1997)

The Plan with Dumbledore

When Dumbledore put on the cursed ring Horcrux, it doomed him. He had about a year to live. Dumbledore made a plan with Snape:

  • ๐ŸŽญ Snape would kill Dumbledore (mercy killing, on Dumbledore's orders)
  • โš”๏ธ This would spare Draco's soul from murder
  • ๐Ÿ This would make Snape Voldemort's most trusted servant
  • ๐Ÿ”ฎ This would prevent the Elder Wand's power from passing (plan failed - Draco disarmed Dumbledore first)
  • ๐Ÿ’” Snape agreed, though it tormented him

The Astronomy Tower

When Death Eaters invaded Hogwarts, Draco cornered Dumbledore but couldn't kill him. Snape arrived and, seeing Dumbledore's pleading look, cast the Killing Curse. Harry witnessed this and believed Snape was the ultimate traitor. Dumbledore fell from the tower.

"Severus...please..." - Dumbledore's last words (begging Snape to follow through with the plan)

Headmaster Snape (1997-1998)

Voldemort's Puppet Headmaster

After Dumbledore's death, Voldemort placed Snape as Headmaster. Death Eaters (Carrows) taught Dark Arts. Snape appeared to support them but secretly minimized harm to students. Sent students to detention with Hagrid (safe) rather than with Carrows (torture).

Protecting Dumbledore's Portrait

Snape protected Dumbledore's portrait from the Carrows and continued following orders from it. He never revealed his true loyalty.

Final Act - The Sword

Following Dumbledore's instructions, Snape hid the Sword of Gryffindor in a frozen lake for Harry to find. He cast a Patronus - a silver doe, the same as Lily's - to lead Harry to it.

Death and Revelation (May 2, 1998)

The Shrieking Shack

During the Battle of Hogwarts, Voldemort summoned Snape. Believing Snape was the Elder Wand's master (because Snape killed Dumbledore), Voldemort ordered Nagini to kill him. The snake attacked, mortally wounding Snape.

The Prince's Tale

As Snape died, he gave Harry his memories - tears containing the truth. Harry viewed them in the Pensieve and learned:

  • ๐Ÿ’š Snape loved Lily Evans his entire life
  • ๐Ÿ’” He never forgave himself for causing her death
  • ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ He spent 17 years protecting Harry for Lily's sake
  • ๐ŸฆŒ His Patronus was a doe - matching Lily's - showing his love never changed
  • โš”๏ธ He killed Dumbledore on Dumbledore's orders
  • ๐Ÿ Harry himself was a Horcrux and had to die
  • ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Everything he'd done was for Lily
"After all this time?"
"Always."

Legacy

Severus Snape remains one of the most debated characters in literature. Was he a hero? A villain? Both? His story asks whether love and sacrifice can redeem a person's terrible choices, and whether protecting someone you resent makes you heroic or just trapped.

What's certain: Snape was instrumental in Voldemort's defeat. Without his intelligence, protection of Harry, and final revelation about the Horcrux in Harry, Voldemort would have won. He died alone, hated by nearly everyone, his loyalty proven only after his death.
