Founder: Godric Gryffindor
Godric Gryffindor was one of the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He came from a wild moor (now known as Godric's Hollow) and was known for his dueling prowess and courage. He wanted Hogwarts to train brave and daring students. Gryffindor's most famous artifact is his sword, which is encrusted with rubies and appears to any Gryffindor in need. The sword can imbibe only that which makes it stronger - Harry used it to kill the Basilisk, and later it absorbed Basilisk venom, allowing it to destroy Horcruxes.
Gryffindor had a falling out with Salazar Slytherin over admitting Muggle-born students. Gryffindor believed in accepting all students with magical ability, while Slytherin wanted only pure-bloods.
The Gryffindor Common Room
The Gryffindor common room is located in Gryffindor Tower, one of the highest points in Hogwarts Castle. To enter, students must give the correct password to the portrait of the Fat Lady, who guards the entrance.
Description:
- π₯ Circular room decorated in scarlet and gold
- πͺ Squashy armchairs and comfortable sofas
- π₯ Cozy fireplace always blazing
- πͺ Windows overlooking the Hogwarts grounds
- π Notice board for announcements and sign-ups
- πΌοΈ Portraits of former Gryffindors adorning the walls

The dormitories are accessed by spiral staircases leading off the common room. Boys' and girls' dormitories are separate, with the girls' stairs enchanted to turn into a slide if a boy tries to climb them!
House Ghost: Nearly Headless Nick
Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, known as "Nearly Headless Nick," is the resident ghost of Gryffindor Tower. He died on October 31, 1492, when he was executed by an improper beheading (it took 45 chops!). His head is still partially attached, which embarrasses him greatly and prevented him from joining the Headless Hunt.
Nick is friendly, helpful, and proud of his house. In Harry's second year, he celebrated his 500th deathday with a party in a dungeon. He was petrified by the Basilisk during the Chamber of Secrets attacks but recovered when Mandrakes were used to revive the victims.
