Overview
The Battle of Hogwarts was the final and most devastating conflict of the Second Wizarding War. It took place on May 2, 1998, when Voldemort and his Death Eaters attacked Hogwarts School to find and kill Harry Potter. The battle resulted in massive casualties on both sides but ultimately ended with Voldemort's permanent defeat.

Harry Returns to Hogwarts
Harry, Ron, and Hermione arrive seeking Ravenclaw's diadem Horcrux. Professor McGonagall takes control of the school from the Carrows (Death Eaters). Students and staff prepare defenses.
Evacuation Begins
Younger students evacuated through Room of Requirement. Of-age students given choice to stay and fight. Slytherin house leaves first (though some return to fight).
Voldemort's Ultimatum
Voldemort's magically magnified voice: "Give me Harry Potter and you shall be rewarded...You have until midnight." The defenders refuse.

Protective enchantments shatter. Death Eaters breach the castle. Fighting spreads throughout Hogwarts - corridors, classrooms, grounds. Defenders use strategy, Death Eaters use dark magic.
Diadem Destroyed
Harry finds Ravenclaw's diadem in Room of Requirement. Vincent Crabbe unleashes Fiendfyre (cursed fire) trying to kill Harry - destroys the diadem but kills Crabbe. Harry saves Draco and Goyle.
Major Casualties
Fred Weasley killed by explosion. Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks killed. Colin Creevey killed. Lavender Brown killed by Fenrir Greyback. Many others fall.
Voldemort Calls Ceasefire
Voldemort: "I command my forces to retreat. You have one hour. Dispose of your dead with dignity...Harry Potter, I now speak directly to you...come to me in the Forbidden Forest...if you do not come, I shall kill every last man, woman, and child who tries to conceal you from me."
Harry's Sacrifice
Harry uses Resurrection Stone, sees parents, Sirius, Lupin. Walks to Forbidden Forest. Surrenders to Voldemort. Voldemort casts Killing Curse. Harry "dies" - but the Horcrux inside him is destroyed. Harry survives.
False Victory
Voldemort forces Hagrid to carry "dead" Harry to castle. Narcissa Malfoy lied to Voldemort (said Harry was dead) to find Draco. Neville defies Voldemort, pulls Gryffindor's sword from Sorting Hat, kills Nagini (final Horcrux). Harry reveals he's alive.
Final Duel
Battle resumes in Great Hall. Molly Weasley kills Bellatrix Lestrange. Harry reveals truth about Elder Wand - he's the master, not Voldemort. Final duel: Harry's Expelliarmus vs. Voldemort's Avada Kedavra. Wand refuses to kill its master. Curse rebounds. Voldemort dies, permanently this time.

Fred Weasley
Killed by explosion while fighting alongside Percy. His last act was laughing at Percy's joke. Twin brother George devastated.

McGonagall vs. Snape

Neville's Defiance
Neville stood up to Voldemort when all seemed lost. Set on fire by Voldemort for refusing to join him, Neville pulled Gryffindor's sword from the Sorting Hat and beheaded Nagini, destroying the final Horcrux.
Molly vs. Bellatrix
"NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU BITCH!" - Molly Weasley dueled and killed Bellatrix Lestrange after Bellatrix nearly hit Ginny with a Killing Curse.
Slughorn's Stand
Professor Slughorn, known for self-preservation, led Slytherin students who returned to fight. He dueled Voldemort alongside McGonagall and Kingsley.
House-Elves Join
Kreacher led the Hogwarts house-elves into battle wielding cleavers and knives, fighting for their school. They attacked Death Eaters' ankles.

Centaurs from Forbidden Forest joined the fight, attacking Death Eaters and giants with arrows and their hooves.
Narcissa's Lie
Narcissa Malfoy lied to Voldemort, telling him Harry was dead when he wasn't. She only cared about finding her son Draco. This lie gave Harry the chance to survive and return.
The Final Duel
In the Great Hall, Harry revealed the truth: Snape was never the Elder Wand's master because he didn't defeat Dumbledore - Draco did. Harry then defeated Draco. Harry was the true master of the Elder Wand.
As Voldemort cast Avada Kedavra and Harry cast Expelliarmus, the Elder Wand refused to kill its master. The Killing Curse rebounded. Tom Riddle fell dead, killed by his own curse, his soul too damaged to return.
"The bang was like a cannon blast, and the golden flames that erupted between them, at the dead center of the circle they had been treading, marked the point where the spells collided. Harry saw Voldemort's green jet meet his own spell, saw the Elder Wand fly high, dark against the sunrise, spinning across the enchanted ceiling like the head of Nagini, spinning through the air toward the master it would not kill, who had come to take full possession of it at last."
Aftermath
The battle ended at dawn with Voldemort's death. Surviving Death Eaters were rounded up. The dead were laid in the Great Hall. Families mourned. Hogwarts, though damaged, stood victorious.
The Second Wizarding War was over. The wizarding world began to rebuild. Harry Potter, at 17, had fulfilled the prophecy and defeated the Dark Lord once and for all.
