At Flourish and Blotts

Setting: King's Cross Station and Hogwarts Express

Date: September 1, 1992

Key Events:

  • The Weasleys, Harry, and Hermione arrive at King's Cross Station

Significant Details: Dobby sealed the barrier to prevent Harry from reaching Hogwarts. Ron's broken wand will cause problems all year. The car has developed a mind of its own. Breaking the International Statute of Secrecy is serious.

The Whomping Willow

Setting: Hogwarts Castle

Date: September 1992 (first week)

  • Lockhart releases Cornish pixies in class and can't control them; Hermione fixes the disaster
  • Hermione is infatuated with Lockhart despite evidence he's a fraud
  • Ron's broken wand backfires constantly (vomiting slugs, broken spells)
  • Nearly Headless Nick asks Harry to attend his Deathday Party (500th anniversary of his death)
  • Quidditch season begins; new Slytherin Seeker is Draco Malfoy
  • Slytherin has new Nimbus 2001 brooms (Lucius bought them for the team)
  • Malfoy calls Hermione a "Mudblood" for the first time
  • Ron tries to curse Malfoy but his broken wand backfires; he vomits slugs for hours
  • Hagrid explains "Mudblood" is the worst insult for Muggle-borns

Significant Details: Lockhart is a celebrity who takes credit for others' achievements. "Mudblood" reveals deep pure-blood prejudice. Colin Creevey is a first-year who hero-worships Harry.

Gilderoy Lockhart

Setting: Hogwarts Castle

Date: October 31, 1992 (Halloween)

  • Harry, Ron, and Hermione attend Nearly Headless Nick's Deathday Party
  • The party is in a freezing dungeon with rotten food and ghostly guests
  • Harry hears a strange voice: "...rip...tear...kill..."

  • They find a flooded corridor and writing on the wall in blood
  • "THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS HAS BEEN OPENED. ENEMIES OF THE HEIR, BEWARE"
  • Mrs. Norris (Filch's cat) is found Petrified, hanging by her tail
  • Students flood into the corridor; everyone sees the message
  • Draco says "You'll be next, Mudbloods" and smiles at Hermione
  • Filch accuses Harry of killing Mrs. Norris

Significant Details: Harry can hear voices others can't hear. The Chamber of Secrets is real. Someone called the "Heir of Slytherin" has opened it. Petrification is a powerful dark magic.

Setting: Hogwarts Castle

Date: November 1992

  • The legend: Salazar Slytherin built a secret chamber before leaving Hogwarts
  • Only his true heir can open it and unleash the monster within to purge the school of Muggle-borns
  • Many have searched but no one has found the Chamber in centuries
  • Everyone suspects Harry is the Heir (he's a Parselmouth, he was found at the scene)
  • Gilderoy Lockhart starts a Dueling Club to teach students to defend themselves
  • First meeting: Lockhart and Snape demonstrate (Snape easily beats Lockhart)
  • Harry is paired with Draco Malfoy
  • Malfoy conjures a snake; it moves toward Justin Finch-Fletchley threateningly
  • Harry speaks Parseltongue to stop the snake (telling it to leave Justin alone)
  • Everyone is horrified; they think Harry was encouraging the snake to attack
  • Ron and Hermione explain Parseltongue is extremely rare and associated with Dark wizards
  • Salazar Slytherin was a famous Parselmouth
  • The whole school now thinks Harry is the Heir of Slytherin

Significant Details: Parseltongue is the ability to speak to snakes. It's a hereditary skill linked to Dark Arts. Harry never knew this ability was unusual. The Chamber has supposedly been searched for but never found.

The Deathday Party

Setting: Hogwarts Castle

Date: December 1992

Key Events:

  • Harry hears the voice again: "So hungry...for so long...kill...time to kill..."
  • Harry runs toward the voice with Ron and Hermione following
  • They find another message: "HER SKELETON WILL LIE IN THE CHAMBER FOREVER"
  • Justin Finch-Fletchley is found Petrified
  • Nearly Headless Nick is also Petrified (black and smoky, stuck mid-air)
  • Ernie MacMillan sees Harry at the scene and runs to alert teachers
  • McGonagall finds Harry and takes him to Dumbledore's office
  • Harry meets Fawkes (Dumbledore's phoenix) on a burning day
  • The Sorting Hat nearly puts Harry in Slytherin because of the connection to Voldemort
  • Dumbledore assures Harry: "It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities"
  • Harry is not suspected by Dumbledore but remains under suspicion by others

Significant Details: Even ghosts can be Petrified. Fawkes is reborn from his ashes. Harry has Slytherin qualities from the connection with Voldemort. Dumbledore emphasizes choice over fate.

The Writing on the Wall

Setting: Hogwarts Castle

Date: December 1992 - January 1993

Key Events:

  • Hermione proposes using Polyjuice Potion to disguise themselves as Slytherins
  • They can question Malfoy to find out if he's the Heir of Slytherin
  • The potion takes a month to brew; they use Moaning Myrtle's bathroom as their base
  • Hermione steals ingredients from Snape's private stores during a chaotic Potions class
  • They need bits of the people they're transforming into (hair, fingernails, etc.)
  • Harry's arm is broken during Quidditch when a rogue Bludger attacks only him
  • Lockhart tries to mend Harry's arm but removes all the bones instead
  • Harry spends the night in the Hospital Wing regrowing bones (painful)
  • Dobby appears and admits he sealed the barrier and cursed the Bludger
  • Dobby reveals the Chamber was opened before, years ago
  • Dobby can't say who opened it or who's behind it now (house-elf restrictions)

Significant Details: Polyjuice Potion requires advanced magic and rare ingredients. The Chamber has been opened before. Dobby is trying to protect Harry but making things worse. Lockhart is dangerously incompetent.

The Rogue Bludger

Setting: Hogwarts Castle

Date: Christmas 1992

Key Events:

  • Harry, Ron, and Hermione remain at Hogwarts for Christmas to use the Polyjuice Potion
  • They drug Crabbe and Goyle with sleeping potion in chocolate cakes
  • They steal hairs from Crabbe and Goyle while they're unconscious
  • Hermione gets cat hair by mistake (from Millicent Bulstrode's cat)
  • Harry becomes Goyle; Ron becomes Crabbe; they enter Slytherin common room
  • They question Draco Malfoy about the Chamber
  • Malfoy doesn't know who the Heir is but wishes he did
  • Malfoy mentions the Chamber was opened 50 years ago; a Mudblood died
  • His father won't tell him details but has some related items at home
  • Hermione is stuck in the bathroom - she has cat features and can't be seen
  • Madam Pomfrey fixes Hermione after several weeks
  • The trio realizes Malfoy isn't the Heir of Slytherin

Significant Details: Polyjuice Potion only works for human transformations. The Chamber was opened 50 years ago and someone died. Lucius Malfoy has information about it but hasn't shared everything with Draco.

The Polyjuice Potion

Setting: Hogwarts Castle

Date: February 1993

Key Events:

  • Harry finds a small black diary in Moaning Myrtle's bathroom
  • The diary belongs to "T. M. Riddle" and is blank
  • The name T. M. Riddle is on an old trophy: Special Award for Services to the School 50 years ago
  • Ron remembers Filch mentioned someone named Riddle during their detention
  • Harry writes in the diary; it writes back
  • Tom Riddle was a student 50 years ago when the Chamber was opened
  • Riddle shows Harry his memory: Hagrid was accused of opening the Chamber
  • Hagrid was expelled for keeping a dangerous creature (an Acromantula named Aragog)
  • Tom Riddle turned Hagrid in and received his award for it
  • Harry, Ron, and Hermione visit Hagrid for answers
  • Hagrid denies opening the Chamber but won't discuss Aragog
  • Someone throws a stone through Hagrid's window with a note: Hagrid will be taken to Azkaban as a precaution

Significant Details: T. M. Riddle's diary is mysteriously preserved. Memory can be stored in objects. Hagrid was framed 50 years ago. Aragog is a giant spider Hagrid raised. Azkaban is wizard prison.

The Valentine's Day

Setting: Hogwarts Castle

Date: Valentine's Day 1993

Key Events:

  • Lockhart decorates the castle for Valentine's Day with pink flowers and heart confetti
  • Lockhart employs dwarves dressed as cupids to deliver valentines
  • A dwarf chases Harry to deliver a singing valentine in front of everyone
  • Draco Malfoy grabs Harry's bag and it breaks, spilling everything
  • Tom Riddle's diary falls out; ink is spilled on it
  • Ginny Weasley is seen crying and looks terrified when she sees the diary
  • Later, Harry finds the diary has vanished from his dormitory
  • Someone broke in and took only the diary, leaving everything else
  • The trio suspects a Gryffindor took it (only they know the password)

Significant Details: Ginny has been acting strangely all year. Someone wants the diary badly enough to steal it. The thief must be in Gryffindor tower.

The Very Secret Diary

Setting: Hogwarts Castle and Forbidden Forest

Date: May-June 1993

Key Events:

  • Hermione is found Petrified, holding a mirror and a piece of paper
  • The paper has information about the Basilisk torn from a library book
  • Hermione figured out the monster is a Basilisk (giant serpent)
  • Basilisk kills with direct eye contact; victims saw it through reflections (water, ghost, mirror)
  • The Basilisk travels through pipes; that's why Harry heard voices in the walls
  • The school will be closed unless the culprit is caught
  • Ginny has been taken into the Chamber; a message says "her skeleton will lie in the Chamber forever"
  • Lockhart is revealed as a fraud who Obliviates people and takes credit for their deeds
  • Harry and Ron force Lockhart to help them; they go to Moaning Myrtle's bathroom
  • Harry speaks Parseltongue to open the entrance (in the sink)
  • They slide down a pipe into the Chamber of Secrets
  • Lockhart steals Ron's broken wand and tries to Obliviate them
  • The spell backfires; Lockhart loses all his memories and the tunnel collapses
  • Ron stays to clear rocks; Harry continues alone to find Ginny

Significant Details: The monster is a Basilisk - king of serpents. It can live hundreds of years. Parseltongue opens the entrance. Moaning Myrtle died 50 years ago - she's the victim from the last opening.

Setting: The Chamber of Secrets

Date: June 1993

Key Events:

  • Harry finds the main Chamber - an enormous hall with serpent statues
  • Ginny Weasley lies motionless on the floor, barely alive
  • Tom Riddle appears - a memory preserved in the diary, becoming solid
  • Tom Marvolo Riddle rearranges his name to spell "I AM LORD VOLDEMORT"
  • Riddle reveals he is Voldemort as a teenager; the diary preserves his 16-year-old self
  • Riddle used the diary to possess Ginny all year
  • Ginny opened the Chamber, set the Basilisk on students, wrote the messages, killed roosters
  • Ginny tried to dispose of the diary but Harry found it
  • She stole it back when she saw Harry had it
  • Riddle framed Hagrid 50 years ago to avoid being sent back to the Muggle orphanage
  • Riddle forced Ginny to come to the Chamber so he could drain her life to restore his own
  • Riddle summons the Basilisk to kill Harry
  • Fawkes arrives with the Sorting Hat; drops the Hat to Harry
  • Harry pulls Godric Gryffindor's sword from the Hat
  • Fawkes blinds the Basilisk so its gaze can't kill Harry

Significant Details: Tom Riddle is young Voldemort. The diary was a Horcrux (not named yet). Voldemort is the Heir of Slytherin. Phoenix tears heal wounds. True Gryffindors can summon the sword from the Hat.

Aragog

Setting: Dumbledore's Office

Date: June 1993

Key Events:

  • They arrive in McGonagall's office; McGonagall is stunned to see them alive
  • Dumbledore, Mr. and Mrs. Weasley, and McGonagall are all present
  • Ginny is distraught; she confesses everything
  • Ginny explains she wrote in the diary about her life and Tom wrote back sympathetically
  • She started doing things without remembering: killing roosters, writing on walls, attacking students
  • She tried to destroy the diary but couldn't
  • Dumbledore comforts her; says Voldemort has fooled many older and wiser wizards
  • Lucius Malfoy arrives with Dobby to take Ginny out of school
  • Harry realizes Lucius gave Ginny the diary in the bookshop
  • Harry tricks Lucius into freeing Dobby by hiding the diary in a sock and giving it to Lucius
  • Lucius throws the sock to Dobby; Dobby is freed (clothes free house-elves)
  • Lucius tries to curse Harry; Dobby protects him
  • Exams are cancelled; Lockhart goes to a ward for memory damage
  • Hagrid returns from Azkaban with his name cleared
  • Dumbledore announces all Petrified students will be revived with Mandrake potion
  • Gryffindor wins the House Cup; Harry has another successful year at Hogwarts

Significant Details: Lucius Malfoy planted the diary to discredit Arthur Weasley and the Muggle Protection Act. Dobby is Lucius's house-elf. Giving clothes to a house-elf frees them. The diary was meant to open the Chamber and frame Hagrid again.

The Chamber of Secrets

Setting: Hogwarts Castle (end of year)

Date: June 1993

Key Events:

  • Hermione and the other Petrified students are revived
  • Hermione runs to hug Harry and Ron
  • End-of-year feast celebrates solving the mystery
  • Hagrid receives a standing ovation when he enters the Great Hall
  • Dumbledore announces exams were cancelled and Lockhart won't return
  • Students return home on the Hogwarts Express
  • Ginny is embarrassed but recovering; she'll be fine
  • Harry returns to the Dursleys for the summer
  • He doesn't tell them magic isn't allowed outside school
  • He jokes about casting spells to keep them in line

Significant Details: The Chamber is closed; the Basilisk is dead. Voldemort's first Horcrux (though not named as such) has been destroyed. Harry proves himself a true Gryffindor.

Dobby's Reward

Setting: King's Cross Station

Date: End of June 1993

Key Events:

  • Students prepare to leave Hogwarts for summer holiday
  • Harry, Ron, and Hermione sign each other's yearbooks and make summer plans
