Your Complete Guide to the Wizarding World

Overview

The Order of Merlin is the most prestigious award in the wizarding world, bestowed upon witches and wizards who have performed exceptional acts of bravery or made outstanding contributions to magical society. Named after the legendary Merlin, the award is divided into three classes: First Class (highest), Second Class, and Third Class.

Classes and Notable Recipients

First Class

Reserved for acts of extraordinary heroism or overwhelming importance. Notable recipients:

Second Class

Recognizes significant acts of bravery or major contributions.

  • Gilderoy Lockhart - Fraudulently claimed five Second Class Orders. All were revoked after his exposure as a fraud in 1993
  • Cornelius Fudge - Self-awarded during his tenure as Minister, damaging the Order's credibility

Third Class

Awarded for noteworthy contributions or modest acts of bravery.

  • Peter Pettigrew - Posthumously awarded in 1981 when presumed dead. Revoked in 1995 when revealed as a Death Eater traitor
  • Bartemius Crouch Sr. - For his work as Head of Magical Law Enforcement during the First Wizarding War

The Medal

Recipients receive a medal bearing Merlin's image with color-coded ribbons:

  • First Class: Gold ribbon with green stripes
  • Second Class: Purple ribbon with gold border
  • Third Class: White ribbon with silver border

Medals possess magical properties: they glow faintly near dark magic, cannot be lost or stolen (automatically returning within 24 hours), and provide minor protection against memory charms.

Controversies

The Order has been plagued by political corruption and fraud:

  • Lockhart's Fraud: Used Memory Charms on real heroes, stealing credit for their deeds
  • Political Abuse: Ministers have awarded Orders to allies regardless of merit
  • The Pettigrew Debacle: Hasty posthumous award without proper investigation

Modern Reforms

After the Second Wizarding War, Minister Kingsley Shacklebolt implemented reforms including transparent nominations, independent review committees, and strict verification standards. Post-war awards included the first non-wizard recipients: house-elves like Kreacher received Third Class Orders for their contributions.
