⚡ Harry James Potter ⚡

The Boy Who Lived • The Chosen One • Master of Death

"It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."

Overview

Harry James Potter is the protagonist of the wizarding world's greatest conflict and one of the most celebrated wizards of all time. Born on July 31, 1980, to James Potter and Lily Potter (née Evans), Harry became known as "The Boy Who Lived" after surviving the Killing Curse cast by Lord Voldemort when he was just fifteen months old. This miraculous survival, which left him with a lightning-bolt scar on his forehead, marked him as the only person ever to survive the Avada Kedavra curse.

Harry's life became defined by his connection to Voldemort and his role in the prophecy that foretold their intertwined fates. Despite growing up in ignorance and neglect with his Muggle relatives, Harry discovered his magical heritage at age eleven and went on to become a symbol of hope and resistance against dark forces. His courage, loyalty, and willingness to sacrifice himself ultimately led to Voldemort's defeat and the end of the Second Wizarding War.

Early Life & The Dursleys

Orphaned as an Infant

On the night of October 31, 1981, Lord Voldemort attacked the Potter family at their home in Godric's Hollow. James Potter was killed first, attempting to hold off Voldemort without his wand to give Lily time to escape with Harry. Lily Potter died protecting her son, and her sacrificial love created powerful magical protection that caused Voldemort's Killing Curse to rebound, destroying his physical form and inadvertently making Harry a Horcrux.

Life at 4 Privet Drive

Following his parents' deaths, baby Harry was left on the doorstep of 4 Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey, with a letter from Albus Dumbledore. His aunt Petunia Dursley (Lily's sister), uncle Vernon Dursley, and cousin Dudley would raise him for the next ten years.

The Dursleys despised magic and treated Harry with cruelty and neglect:

  • Living conditions: Forced to live in the cupboard under the stairs until age 11
  • Clothes: Wore Dudley's hand-me-down castoffs, far too large for him
  • Food: Often given meager portions while Dudley was spoiled
  • Isolation: Kept ignorant of his magical heritage and true identity
  • Abuse: Subjected to verbal abuse, unreasonable chores, and exclusion
  • Lies: Told his parents died in a car crash, his scar from that accident

Signs of Magic

Despite the Dursleys' attempts to "stamp out" the magic in him, Harry experienced unexplained phenomena throughout his childhood:

  • Hair growing back overnight after a terrible haircut from Aunt Petunia
  • Shrinking a hideous sweater Aunt Petunia tried to force on him
  • Appearing on the school roof while running from Dudley's gang
  • Releasing a boa constrictor at the zoo by vanishing the glass

These incidents only made the Dursleys more hostile and afraid of him, though Harry himself didn't understand what was happening or why.

Discovery of Magic & Hogwarts Arrival

Eleventh Birthday Revelation

The Dursleys tried desperately to prevent Harry from receiving his Hogwarts letter, even taking him to a hut on a rock in the sea. But on the stroke of midnight on Harry's eleventh birthday (July 31, 1991), Rubeus Hagrid burst through the door and changed Harry's life forever.

Hagrid revealed the truth:

  • Harry was a wizard, and a famous one at that
  • His parents were murdered by Lord Voldemort, not killed in a car crash
  • He survived the Killing Curse as an infant—unprecedented in magical history
  • The entire wizarding world knew his name as "The Boy Who Lived"
  • He had a place waiting for him at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Diagon Alley & First Wand

Hagrid took Harry to Diagon Alley where Harry discovered he was wealthy (his parents had left him gold at Gringotts) and bought his school supplies. At Ollivanders, Harry was chosen by a holly and phoenix feather wand, 11 inches, nice and supple. Significantly, the wand's phoenix feather came from Fawkes, Dumbledore's phoenix, and was brother to Voldemort's wand—a connection that would prove crucial later.

Hogwarts Years: First Year (1991-1992)

Sorting & Gryffindor

On September 1, 1991, Harry boarded the Hogwarts Express and met Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, who would become his best friends. During the Sorting Ceremony, the Sorting Hat considered placing Harry in Slytherin (due to the piece of Voldemort's soul inside him) but ultimately respected Harry's choice and sorted him into Gryffindor.

Youngest Seeker in a Century

After demonstrating natural flying ability during his first broomstick lesson, Harry was recruited by Professor McGonagall to be Gryffindor's Seeker—the youngest house team player in a century. This role became a source of pride and identity for Harry throughout his school years.

The Philosopher's Stone

In his first year, Harry, Ron, and Hermione discovered that someone was attempting to steal the Philosopher's Stone hidden at Hogwarts. They eventually realized that Professor Quirrell was being possessed by Voldemort and seeking the Stone to restore the Dark Lord to power. Harry confronted Quirrell/Voldemort in the underground chambers and survived their encounter because Lily's protection still lived in his blood, burning Quirrell when he touched Harry. Harry passed out after seeing Voldemort's face on the back of Quirrell's head and woke in the hospital wing, where Dumbledore explained what had happened.

Second Year (1992-1993): Chamber of Secrets

Dobby's Warnings

Before term began, the house-elf Dobby tried to prevent Harry from returning to Hogwarts, warning of terrible danger. Despite being trapped at the Dursleys when Dobby sealed the barrier at King's Cross, Harry and Ron flew Mr. Weasley's enchanted car to school.

The Voice in the Walls

Harry began hearing a sinister voice speaking Parseltongue (the language of snakes) through the walls—a voice only he could hear. When students began being Petrified and messages appeared written in blood about the "Chamber of Secrets," suspicion fell on Harry, especially after he publicly spoke Parseltongue to a snake during the Dueling Club.

Discovering the Truth

Harry discovered that fifty years earlier, a memory of Tom Riddle (Voldemort's younger self) had been preserved in an enchanted diary. The diary, planted on Ginny Weasley by Lucius Malfoy, was possessing her and using her to open the Chamber and unleash the Basilisk. Harry descended into the Chamber, saved Ginny, destroyed the diary (unknowingly destroying his first Horcrux), killed the Basilisk with Godric Gryffindor's sword, and learned he shared certain abilities with Voldemort—including Parseltongue—because of their connection.

Third Year (1993-1994): Prisoner of Azkaban

Sirius Black's Escape

The year began with news that Sirius Black, believed to be Voldemort's most loyal follower, had escaped from Azkaban prison and was hunting Harry. Dementors were stationed around Hogwarts to capture Black, but they affected Harry more severely than other students, causing him to relive his parents' deaths.

The Patronus Charm

Professor Remus Lupin taught Harry the Patronus Charm to defend against Dementors. Harry's Patronus took the form of a stag—the same animal his father could transform into as an Animagus. This powerful defensive charm became one of Harry's signature spells.

The Truth About Sirius

Harry discovered that Sirius was actually his godfather and innocent of the crimes for which he was imprisoned. The real traitor was Peter Pettigrew, who had framed Sirius and been hiding as Ron's pet rat Scabbers for twelve years. Though Pettigrew escaped, Harry formed a deep bond with Sirius and finally had a connection to his parents beyond memories.

Fourth Year (1994-1995): Triwizard Tournament

The Goblet of Fire

Despite being underage, Harry's name emerged from the Goblet of Fire, forcing him to compete in the dangerous Triwizard Tournament as an unexpected fourth champion. This caused tension with Ron and made Harry the target of suspicion and hostility from much of the school.

The Three Tasks

Harry faced three deadly challenges:

  • First Task: Retrieved a golden egg from a Hungarian Horntail dragon
  • Second Task: Rescued Ron from the depths of the Black Lake
  • Third Task: Navigated a dangerous maze to reach the Triwizard Cup

Voldemort's Return

The Triwizard Cup was a Portkey that transported Harry and Cedric Diggory to a graveyard where Voldemort's followers were waiting. Harry witnessed Cedric's murder and was forced to participate in a dark ritual that restored Voldemort to physical form, using Harry's blood. This had two critical effects: it gave Voldemort access to Lily's protection and paradoxically strengthened that same protection, making Harry immune to Voldemort while the Dark Lord lived.

Harry dueled Voldemort and escaped due to Priori Incantatem—when their brother wands connected, echoes of Voldemort's recent victims appeared, including Harry's parents and Cedric, giving Harry precious seconds to grab Cedric's body and the Portkey back to Hogwarts.

Fifth Year (1995-1996): Order of the Phoenix

Ministry Denial & Isolation

The Ministry of Magic, led by Cornelius Fudge, refused to believe Voldemort had returned and launched a smear campaign against Harry and Dumbledore. Harry faced a disciplinary hearing for using magic to defend himself against Dementors, Rita Skeeter's articles portrayed him as disturbed, and many believed he was lying about Voldemort for attention.

Dolores Umbridge's Tyranny

Dolores Umbridge, sent by the Ministry to take over Hogwarts, refused to teach practical defensive magic and punished Harry with a blood quill that carved "I must not tell lies" into his hand. In response, Harry formed Dumbledore's Army, a secret student organization where he taught Defense Against the Dark Arts to dozens of students.

Visions & Occlumency

Harry's connection to Voldemort strengthened, giving him visions of the Dark Lord's thoughts and actions. Dumbledore arranged for Snape to teach Harry Occlumency to close his mind, but the lessons failed due to mutual animosity. Harry saw visions of the Department of Mysteries and a mysterious weapon Voldemort sought.

Battle of the Department of Mysteries

Voldemort planted a false vision of Sirius being tortured at the Ministry. Harry led members of Dumbledore's Army to the Department of Mysteries to rescue him, where they were ambushed by Death Eaters led by Bellatrix Lestrange. The Death Eaters sought a prophecy about Harry and Voldemort. During the battle, the prophecy was destroyed, Sirius was killed by Bellatrix, and Harry was briefly possessed by Voldemort before Dumbledore arrived and drove the Dark Lord out.

The Prophecy

Dumbledore finally revealed the full prophecy to Harry:

"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches... born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies... and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not... and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives..."

This prophecy had driven Voldemort to target the Potter family, but Dumbledore emphasized that it was Voldemort's choice to believe it—and Harry's choice to fight—that gave it power.

Sixth Year (1996-1997): Half-Blood Prince

Private Lessons with Dumbledore

Dumbledore began giving Harry private lessons, sharing memories about Voldemort's past as Tom Riddle. Through these lessons, Harry learned about Horcruxes—objects containing pieces of a soul—and realized that Voldemort had made multiple Horcruxes to achieve immortality. Their mission became clear: find and destroy all the Horcruxes before confronting Voldemort.

The Half-Blood Prince's Potions Book

Harry excelled in Potions using an old textbook annotated by someone calling themselves the "Half-Blood Prince." The book contained improved potion recipes and powerful spells, including Sectumsempra. Harry later discovered the book had belonged to Severus Snape.

Romance with Ginny

Harry developed romantic feelings for Ron's sister Ginny Weasley and they began dating. However, he eventually broke up with her to protect her from Voldemort's vengeance, not wanting her to become a target.

The Cave & Dumbledore's Death

Dumbledore took Harry to a cave where Voldemort had hidden a Horcrux. Harry was forced to make Dumbledore drink a terrible potion that severely weakened him. They retrieved the locket (though it turned out to be a fake left by R.A.B.—Regulus Arcturus Black) and returned to Hogwarts, where Death Eaters had infiltrated.

On the Astronomy Tower, Draco Malfoy disarmed Dumbledore but couldn't kill him. Severus Snape arrived and cast the Killing Curse, murdering Dumbledore before Harry's eyes. Harry pursued Snape but was unable to defeat him. Dumbledore's death left Harry devastated and determined to finish the mission to destroy the Horcruxes.

Seventh Year: The Horcrux Hunt

Leaving Hogwarts

Harry chose not to return to Hogwarts for his seventh year, instead dedicating himself to finding and destroying Voldemort's Horcruxes. He was joined by Ron and Hermione, who made the dangerous choice to abandon their own safety and families to help him.

The Seven Potters

The Order of the Phoenix evacuated Harry from Privet Drive using Polyjuice Potion to create six decoys. The Death Eaters attacked, killing Mad-Eye Moody and injuring others. Harry's instinctive use of Expelliarmus—a signature spell—gave away his identity, but he survived.

The Deathly Hallows

Harry inherited items from Dumbledore's will: the Snitch from his first Quidditch match (containing the Resurrection Stone) and The Tales of Beedle the Bard. Through this book, Harry learned of the Deathly Hallows: the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone, and the Invisibility Cloak (which Harry already possessed, inherited from his father).

Months on the Run

Harry, Ron, and Hermione spent months camping in the wilderness, searching for Horcruxes while evading Snatchers and Death Eaters. The hunt was grueling:

  • Retrieved and destroyed Slytherin's locket from Dolores Umbridge at the Ministry
  • Nearly captured multiple times by Snatchers
  • Ron temporarily abandoned them due to the locket's corrupting influence, then returned and destroyed it
  • Visited Godric's Hollow on Christmas Eve, where Nagini attacked them
  • Learned about the Deathly Hallows from Xenophilius Lovegood
  • Were captured and taken to Malfoy Manor

Malfoy Manor & Dobby's Death

At Malfoy Manor, Harry witnessed Hermione's torture by Bellatrix Lestrange. Dobby rescued them, but was killed by Bellatrix's knife during their escape. Harry dug Dobby's grave by hand and buried his first friend, a deeply traumatic moment that reinforced his resolve.

Gringotts Break-In

The trio broke into Gringotts to steal Hufflepuff's Cup (another Horcrux) from the Lestranges' vault. They escaped on the back of a dragon, destroying the Cup with a Basilisk fang from the Chamber of Secrets.

Battle of Hogwarts

Return to Hogwarts

Harry learned that the final Horcrux was hidden at Hogwarts—Ravenclaw's Diadem. He returned to the school, where McGonagall and the other teachers prepared to defend against Voldemort's army. Students and Order members rallied to fight.

Snape's Memories

Harry witnessed Voldemort murder Snape (believing this would make him master of the Elder Wand). Snape's dying act was to give Harry his memories. In the Pensieve, Harry learned the stunning truth: Snape had loved Lily Potter his entire life and had been protecting Harry all along on Dumbledore's orders. Snape was one of the bravest men Harry had ever known.

The Forest Walk

Harry also learned from Snape's memories that he himself was an accidental Horcrux—a piece of Voldemort's soul lived inside him, placed there the night his parents died. For Voldemort to be truly defeated, Harry had to die.

Harry walked into the Forbidden Forest to face Voldemort, using the Resurrection Stone to summon the spirits of his parents, Sirius, and Lupin, who walked with him to his death. He told them he was ready and dropped the Stone. He faced Voldemort and did not defend himself when the Killing Curse hit him.

King's Cross & Choice

Harry found himself in a dreamlike King's Cross Station where he spoke with Dumbledore's spirit. Dumbledore explained that Voldemort's use of Harry's blood to restore his body had protected Harry from death. The Killing Curse had destroyed the Horcrux within Harry, but Harry could choose to return to life. He chose to go back.

The Final Duel

Pretending to be dead, Harry was carried back to Hogwarts by Hagrid. When Voldemort tried to torture Neville Longbottom, Harry revealed himself and the battle resumed.

In the Great Hall, Harry confronted Voldemort one final time. He explained that Snape had never been the true master of the Elder Wand—Draco Malfoy was, having disarmed Dumbledore. And because Harry had disarmed Draco at Malfoy Manor, Harry was now the Elder Wand's true master.

When Voldemort cast the Killing Curse and Harry cast Expelliarmus simultaneously, the Elder Wand refused to kill its master. Voldemort's curse rebounded and killed him, finally ending his reign of terror.

It was love that gave him the strength to walk to his death, and love that allowed him to return.

  • Made Harry a Horcrux, containing a piece of Voldemort's soul
