Who Were The Marauders?
The Marauders were four Gryffindor students who attended Hogwarts in the 1970s: James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew. Best friends and self-proclaimed troublemakers, they created the Marauder's Map and became illegal Animagi to help Remus during his werewolf transformations.

The Four Marauders
James Potter - "Prongs"
Animagus Form: Stag
Role: Leader, Chaser, Head Boy
Harry's father. Talented Quidditch player, initially arrogant but matured. Married Lily Evans. His Patronus (and Animagus form) was a stag, which Harry inherited. Stood up to Voldemort three times. Murdered by Voldemort on October 31, 1981.
Sirius Black - "Padfoot"
Animagus Form: Large black dog
Role: The wild one, Harry's godfather
From pure-blood Black family but rejected their values. James's best friend. Wrongly imprisoned in Azkaban for 12 years for a crime Peter committed. Escaped and lived in hiding. Killed by Bellatrix Lestrange (his cousin) in 1996.
Remus Lupin - "Moony"
Condition: Werewolf
Role: The voice of reason, Prefect, Professor
Bitten by Fenrir Greyback as a child. The others became Animagi to keep him company during transformations. Brilliant wizard and teacher. Married Nymphadora Tonks. Killed in Battle of Hogwarts 1998, leaving son Teddy.
Peter Pettigrew - "Wormtail"
Animagus Form: Rat
Role: The traitor
The weakest of the four, sought powerful friends. Became Voldemort's spy and betrayed James and Lily's location. Faked his own death, framing Sirius. Hid as Ron's pet rat "Scabbers" for 12 years. Helped resurrect Voldemort. Strangled by his own silver hand 1998.
Their Hogwarts Years (1971-1978)
First Year - The Friendship Forms
All four sorted into Gryffindor. James and Sirius become instant best friends. They befriend the shy Remus and Peter, who follows the popular duo.
Remus's Secret Revealed
The others discover Remus is a werewolf. Instead of abandoning him, James, Sirius, and Peter begin studying to become Animagi - a process taking years of difficult magic.
Becoming Animagi
James, Sirius, and Peter successfully become Animagi (illegally - never registered with Ministry). They now accompany Remus during full moons in animal form, allowing him to roam safely. Remus becomes a Prefect.
The Bullying Incident
After O.W.L. exams, James and Sirius publicly humiliate Severus Snape by the lake. When Lily defends Snape, he calls her a "Mudblood," ending their friendship. This memory haunts Snape and fuels his hatred of James.
The Marauder's Map Created
The four create the Marauder's Map - a magical map showing every person's location in Hogwarts in real-time, plus all secret passages. Used for pranks and sneaking around.
James and Lily
James matures, stops hexing people for fun, and becomes Head Boy. Lily Evans finally agrees to date him. They fall in love. All four graduate 1978.

After Hogwarts - The First Wizarding War
Joining the Order of the Phoenix
All four join the fight against Voldemort. James, Lily, and Sirius become prominent Order members. Remus works as a spy among werewolves. Peter is also in the Order but secretly wavers.
Harry Potter Born
James and Lily's son is born. Sirius becomes Harry's godfather. Unknown to them, a prophecy has marked Harry as Voldemort's equal.
Peter's Betrayal
Peter secretly becomes Voldemort's spy (Death Eater). When James and Lily go into hiding under the Fidelius Charm, they make Peter their Secret Keeper (Sirius suggested it, thinking he'd be the obvious target). Peter immediately betrays their location to Voldemort.
The Potters Murdered
Voldemort attacks the Potters at Godric's Hollow. James dies trying to hold him off wandlessly. Lily dies protecting Harry. The curse rebounds, destroying Voldemort's body. Harry survives with a scar.
Sirius Framed
Sirius confronts Peter on a London street. Peter yells that Sirius betrayed the Potters, blows up the street (killing 12 Muggles), cuts off his own finger, and escapes in rat form. Sirius is arrested and sent to Azkaban without trial. Everyone believes he's guilty.
The Marauders' Legacy
Harry's Patronus
Harry's Patronus is a stag - the same as James's Animagus form. He sees it as his father protecting him, saying "Prongs rode again last night."
Teddy Lupin
Remus and Tonks's son, Harry's godson. Metamorphmagus like his mother. Represents hope after the war - the Marauders' legacy living on.
The Map Lives On
The Marauder's Map helped defeat Voldemort. Fred and George found it, used it for pranks, then gave it to Harry who used it to save lives.
Lessons Learned
The Marauders teach that friendship is powerful but imperfect people can still be heroes. Their story shows consequences of bullying (Snape) and importance of trust.
The Truth Revealed (Book 3)
In Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry learns the full truth about the Marauders:

- 🐕 Sirius is innocent - Peter was the traitor
- 🐺 Remus was a werewolf, not dangerous to friends
- 🦌 James, Sirius, and Peter became Animagi out of love for Remus
