Overview
Dumbledore's Army (D.A.) was a secret student organization formed during the 1995-1996 school year to learn defensive magic in defiance of Dolores Umbridge's refusal to teach practical Defense Against the Dark Arts. Founded by Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, the D.A. provided students with the skills necessary to defend themselves against dark magic—skills they weren't receiving in official classes due to Ministry interference in Hogwarts education.
The organization met secretly in the Room of Requirement, where Harry taught fellow students spells ranging from basic Disarming Charms to advanced magic like the Patronus Charm. The D.A. attracted members from multiple houses, united by their desire to learn real defensive magic and their understanding that Voldemort's return meant they needed to be prepared for genuine threats rather than merely passing examinations.
Formation and Activities
The D.A. began with 28 members who signed a charmed parchment (which Hermione had cursed to permanently disfigure anyone who betrayed the group) at their first meeting in the Hog's Head. Harry led practical lessons teaching Stunning Spells, Shield Charms, Reductor Curses, and various other defensive magic. Students practiced dueling and learned to produce corporeal Patronuses, with Harry proving to be an effective and patient teacher despite his initial reluctance to take on the role.
The organization was eventually discovered when Marietta Edgecombe betrayed them to Umbridge. Dumbledore took responsibility for the group to protect Harry and was forced to flee Hogwarts. However, the D.A.'s work wasn't wasted—the skills members learned proved invaluable during the Battle of the Department of Mysteries and later during the Second Wizarding War, when many D.A. members fought in the Battle of Hogwarts.
Revival During the Carrows' Regime
The D.A. was revived during the 1997-1998 school year when Death Eaters Amycus and Alecto Carrow controlled Hogwarts. Led by Neville Longbottom, Luna Lovegood, and Ginny Weasley, the reformed D.A. resisted the Carrows' regime through various acts of defiance and by protecting younger students from the Death Eaters' cruelty. The organization used the Room of Requirement as a sanctuary for students hiding from punishment, maintaining resistance despite enormous pressure and danger.
During the Battle of Hogwarts, D.A. members formed the core of student defenders, using the skills Harry had taught them years earlier to fight Death Eaters and protect the school. The organization's legacy demonstrated that student initiative, when properly directed and supported, could make genuine contributions to resistance against tyranny and that the bonds formed through shared struggle and learning would endure long after the immediate crisis that brought the group together.
