The First Wizarding War
1970-1981 - The Rise and Fall of Voldemort
Overview
The First Wizarding War was a devastating conflict that lasted approximately eleven years, from 1970 to October 31, 1981. Led by Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters, it was a campaign of terror aimed at establishing pure-blood supremacy and overthrowing the Ministry of Magic. Timeline of the War
Tom Riddle's Rise
Tom Marvolo Riddle, now calling himself Lord Voldemort, gathered followers among pure-blood supremacists, dark wizards, and those seeking power. He had created multiple Horcruxes, making himself virtually immortal. His Death Eaters began recruiting and operating in secret.
War Begins
Voldemort's forces emerged from the shadows. Attacks on Muggle-borns, half-bloods, and "blood traitors" began. The Dark Mark appeared over homes where murders occurred. Fear spread throughout the wizarding community. The Ministry struggled to respond effectively.
Order of the Phoenix Founded
Albus Dumbledore formed the Order of the Phoenix to fight Voldemort. Original members included James Potter, Lily Evans (later Potter), Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, Frank and Alice Longbottom, Marlene McKinnon, and many others. They operated in secret, countering Death Eater attacks.
Giants Join Voldemort
Voldemort recruited giants to his cause, promising them freedom and revenge against wizards who had marginalized them. Giant attacks became a terrifying reality. Whole villages were destroyed. The Ministry's attempts to negotiate with remaining giants failed.
Dementors Side with Voldemort
Dementors abandoned their posts at Azkaban and joined Voldemort's forces. Their presence spread despair wherever they went. The Patronus Charm became essential knowledge for Order members. Depression and hopelessness gripped the wizarding world.
Peak of Death Eater Power
Voldemort's forces controlled much of the wizarding world. Disappearances and murders were daily occurrences. Families were torn apart. The Ministry was infiltrated by Death Eaters and their supporters. People feared to speak Voldemort's name, calling him "You-Know-Who" or "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named."
Notable Order Victories
Despite being outnumbered, the Order scored several victories. Aurors and Order members captured or killed Death Eaters. Key battles prevented massacres. However, every victory came at a cost - Order members died regularly, and replacements were hard to find.
The McKinnon Family Massacred
The entire McKinnon family was murdered by Death Eaters - Marlene McKinnon (Order member) and all her relatives. Such family annihilations were common. Voldemort believed in punishing "blood traitors" by destroying entire bloodlines.
The Prewett Brothers Killed
Fabian and Gideon Prewett (Molly Weasley's brothers) were killed by five Death Eaters including Antonin Dolohov. They fought bravely but were overwhelmed. Their deaths exemplified the Order's willingness to fight against impossible odds.
Edgar Bones and Family Murdered
Edgar Bones (Order member and brother of Amelia Bones) was killed along with his wife and children. Like the McKinnons, his entire family was exterminated. Such brutality was Voldemort's signature tactic.
Dorcas Meadowes Killed by Voldemort
Order member Dorcas Meadowes was personally killed by Voldemort - a sign of her effectiveness against his forces. Voldemort rarely involved himself in individual killings unless someone posed a significant threat.
The Prophecy Made
Sybill Trelawney made a prophecy to Dumbledore about a child born at the end of July who would have the power to defeat Voldemort. Severus Snape overheard part of it and reported to Voldemort. The prophecy could have referred to Harry Potter or Neville Longbottom - both born in late July to parents who had defied Voldemort three times.
Voldemort Hunts the Potters
Voldemort chose to pursue Harry Potter, thereby "marking him as his equal" and fulfilling the prophecy. The Potter family went into hiding under the Fidelius Charm with Peter Pettigrew as Secret-Keeper (not Sirius Black as everyone believed). Severus Snape, in love with Lily Potter, begged Voldemort to spare her.
Longbottoms Tortured
Frank and Alice Longbottom, powerful Aurors and Order members, were tortured into insanity by Bellatrix Lestrange, Rodolphus Lestrange, Rabastan Lestrange, and Barty Crouch Jr. using the Cruciatus Curse. They were trying to find out Voldemort's whereabouts after his fall. The Longbottoms survived but never recovered, spending the rest of their lives in St. Mungo's Hospital.
Peter Pettigrew's Betrayal
Peter Pettigrew, Secret-Keeper for the Potters, betrayed them to Voldemort. He revealed their location at Godric's Hollow. Voldemort went there immediately on Halloween night to kill the one-year-old Harry Potter and eliminate the prophecy's threat.
The Potters' Last Stand
At Godric's Hollow, James Potter confronted Voldemort wandlessly (his wand was in another room) trying to give Lily time to escape with Harry. James was killed instantly. Lily Potter refused Voldemort's offer to stand aside and spare her life. She died protecting Harry. Her sacrifice created ancient magic - love-based protection for her son.
Voldemort's Downfall
Voldemort cast the Killing Curse at baby Harry. Because of Lily's sacrifice, the curse rebounded. Voldemort's body was destroyed. A fragment of his soul latched onto Harry (creating an unintentional Horcrux). Harry survived with only a lightning-bolt scar. Voldemort, kept alive by his other Horcruxes, fled as a wraith. The war ended instantly.
Celebration and Tragedy
Wizards worldwide celebrated Voldemort's fall. Harry became famous as "The Boy Who Lived." But celebration was mixed with grief - the Potters were dead, and many families had been destroyed. Hagrid brought Harry from the ruined house to Dumbledore, who placed him with the Dursleys at Privet Drive.
Sirius Black Framed
Peter Pettigrew faked his own death, framing Sirius Black for betraying the Potters and murdering twelve Muggles. Sirius was arrested and sent to Azkaban without trial. He would spend twelve years there for crimes he didn't commit. Pettigrew lived as Ron Weasley's rat "Scabbers" for twelve years.
Death Eater Trials
Captured Death Eaters were tried before the Wizengamot. Some were sent to Azkaban (Bellatrix Lestrange, the Carrows, Dolohov, etc.). Others claimed they were under the Imperius Curse and were freed (Lucius Malfoy, Crabbe, Goyle, etc.). Igor Karkaroff named names in exchange for freedom. Barty Crouch Sr. sent his own son to Azkaban.
Aftermath and Recovery
The wizarding world slowly recovered. Families mourned their dead. The Ministry worked to rebuild trust. However, many Death Eaters had escaped justice, and the trauma of the war lingered for decades. Those who lived through it never forgot the darkness of those years.

The Night That Changed Everything
October 31, 1981 - Halloween night at Godric's Hollow - changed the course of wizarding history forever.
When Lily Potter refused to stand aside and let Voldemort kill her son, she created ancient magic through her sacrifice. Love-based protection, the oldest and most powerful magic. When Voldemort's Killing Curse hit Harry, it rebounded because of this protection. The Dark Lord's body was destroyed, his soul ripped from it.
A fragment of Voldemort's already unstable soul latched onto the only living thing in the room - Harry Potter. This created an unintentional Horcrux, connecting Harry and Voldemort in ways neither would understand for sixteen years. The scar on Harry's forehead marked both his survival and this dark connection.
"Not Harry, not Harry, please not Harry!"
"Stand aside, you silly girl... stand aside, now."
"Not Harry, please no, take me, kill me instead!"
- Lily Potter's last words, the words that saved her son and destroyed the Dark Lord
Casualties of the War
Hundreds died during the First Wizarding War. These are some of the known victims:

- Sirius Black - Twelve years in Azkaban for Peter Pettigrew's crimes
In addition to these known casualties, hundreds of unnamed witches, wizards, and Muggles were killed. Entire families were destroyed. The psychological trauma affected an entire generation.
Terror Tactics
Voldemort and the Death Eaters used systematic terror to control the wizarding population:
- The Dark Mark - A skull with a serpent tongue cast into the sky above locations where Death Eaters had killed. Seeing it inspired panic.
- Disappearances - People vanished overnight. Sometimes bodies were found, often they simply disappeared forever.
- Torture - The Cruciatus Curse was used extensively. Some victims were driven insane, others were killed after prolonged suffering.
- Imperius Curse - People were placed under mind control and forced to commit crimes or spy on others.
- Targeting Families - "Blood traitors" often had their entire families murdered to eliminate bloodlines.
- Public Attacks - Some killings were public spectacles designed to spread fear.
- Muggle Murders - Muggles were killed for sport or to terrorize Muggle-born wizards.
- Infiltration - The Ministry was infiltrated, making it unclear who could be trusted.
The fear was so pervasive that people stopped speaking Voldemort's name, creating jinxes to punish those who did. Even years after the war, most wizards still called him "You-Know-Who" or "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named."
Why Voldemort Fell
Several factors contributed to Voldemort's downfall on that Halloween night:
- Obsession with the Prophecy - By trying to prevent the prophecy, Voldemort made it come true. If he had ignored it, Harry would never have become his equal.
- Inability to Understand Love - Voldemort never understood the power of Lily's sacrifice. He offered her the chance to live, never imagining she would die for her child.
- Choosing Harry Over Neville - The prophecy could have meant either boy. By choosing Harry (the half-blood like himself), Voldemort "marked him as his equal."
- Severus Snape's Betrayal - Snape's love for Lily led him to betray Voldemort to Dumbledore. Though Snape's information came too late to save Lily, it helped the Order throughout the war.
- Arrogance - Voldemort never considered he might fail. He went to Godric's Hollow alone, expecting an easy murder.
- Ancient Magic - The protection Lily's sacrifice created was magic Voldemort didn't understand or predict.
Aftermath and Legacy
The First Wizarding War left deep scars on the wizarding community:
- A Generation Traumatized - Those who lived through the war never fully recovered. Paranoia, grief, and fear lingered for decades.
- Families Destroyed - Countless children were orphaned, including Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom.
- Political Chaos - The Ministry had to rebuild after infiltration and corruption. Trust in government was severely damaged.
- Death Eaters Escaped - Many Death Eaters avoided justice by claiming they were under the Imperius Curse or through bribery.
- Sirius Black Wrongfully Imprisoned - An innocent man spent twelve years in Azkaban while the real traitor lived free.
- Harry's Fame - The Boy Who Lived became the most famous wizard in Britain, setting the stage for his unusual childhood and adolescence.
- False Security - The wizarding world believed Voldemort was gone forever. They were wrong - his Horcruxes ensured his eventual return.
- Lessons Unlearned - When Dumbledore and Harry tried to warn about Voldemort's return in 1995, the Ministry refused to believe them, repeating the same denial that had weakened resistance in the First War.
The First Wizarding War ended on October 31, 1981. But the seeds of the Second War were already planted. Voldemort's Horcruxes ensured he would return, and many of his followers remained free, waiting for their master's call.
The Boy Who Lived
Harry Potter became the most famous wizard in Britain at age one. He survived the Killing Curse - something no one had ever done before. His scar became a symbol of hope for those who had suffered under Voldemort's terror.
Dumbledore placed Harry with his aunt and uncle, the Dursleys, at Number Four, Privet Drive. The blood protection from Lily's sacrifice would continue as long as Harry called his mother's blood relative's house "home." This protection, renewed by Lily's sister Petunia taking Harry in, would keep him safe from Voldemort for nearly sixteen years.
Harry grew up knowing nothing about magic, his parents, or his fame. He believed his parents died in a car crash. He didn't know he was the reason the wizarding world could sleep peacefully again. He had no idea that one day, he would have to face Voldemort once more and finish what his mother's sacrifice had started.
The war was over, but Harry Potter's story was just beginning.
