๐ฎ The Prophecy
The Prophecy is a prediction made by Sybill Trelawney that linked the fates of Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort, foretelling that one must kill the other.
๐ The Full Prophecy
"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches... born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies... and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not... and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives... the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies..."
๐ค The Making of the Prophecy
Sybill Trelawney made the prophecy during her job interview with Albus Dumbledore at the Hog's Head Inn in 1980. She entered a trance state and spoke the words without being aware of what she said.
Unknown to them, Severus Snape was eavesdropping. He heard the first part of the prophecy before being caught and ejected by the barman (Aberforth Dumbledore). Snape immediately reported what he'd heard to Voldemort.
โก Two Possible Boys
The prophecy's description could have applied to two boys:
- Harry Potter - born July 31st, parents defied Voldemort three times
- Neville Longbottom - born July 30th, parents defied Voldemort three times
Voldemort chose to pursue Harry, likely because Harry was a half-blood like himself while Neville was pure-blood. This choice fulfilled the prophecy's statement that Voldemort would "mark him as his equal."
๐ฅ Self-Fulfilling
The prophecy only came true because Voldemort believed it and acted on it:
- He targeted Harry's family
- He attempted to kill Harry
- He inadvertently marked Harry as his equal (the scar)
- He transferred some of his powers to Harry (Parseltongue, connection)
- He created his own nemesis
Dumbledore emphasized that the prophecy only mattered because Voldemort chose to act on it. If he had ignored it, Harry would have been just another boy.
๐๏ธ The Hall of Prophecy
Prophecies are recorded and stored in the Department of Mysteries at the Ministry of Magic. They appear as glowing glass spheres with labels indicating the subject and date.
The prophecy about Harry and Voldemort was labeled: "S.P.T. to A.P.W.B.D. Dark Lord and (?) Harry Potter" Only the subjects of a prophecy (or the Unspeakables who guard them) can retrieve it from the shelf.
๐ฏ Voldemort's Quest
Voldemort desperately wanted to hear the complete prophecy, believing it would tell him how to kill Harry. He:
- Planted false visions in Harry's mind through their connection
- Made Harry believe Sirius was being tortured in the Department
- Lured Harry to the Ministry to retrieve the prophecy
- Sent Death Eaters to ambush Harry and take the prophecy
The plan failed when the prophecy was destroyed during the battle in the Department of Mysteries.
๐ญ "Power the Dark Lord Knows Not"
The prophecy stated Harry would have "power the Dark Lord knows not." Dumbledore revealed this power was love - specifically, the ability to love despite tremendous loss and pain.
Voldemort, who had never loved and could not understand love, was fundamentally incapable of comprehending or defending against this power. Lily's sacrificial love protected Harry, and Harry's ability to love made him willing to sacrifice himself, which triggered the protection for everyone at Hogwarts.
๐ Who Knew
Very few people knew the complete prophecy:
- Dumbledore - heard it firsthand
- Trelawney - made it (but couldn't remember)
- Snape - heard the first half
- Voldemort - heard from Snape (incomplete)
- Harry - told by Dumbledore after Sirius's death
โ๏ธ "Neither Can Live While the Other Survives"
This line meant that Harry and Voldemort's lives were intertwined. One would have to kill the other - there could be no coexistence, no compromise. The war would only end when one of them died.
The prophecy was ultimately fulfilled when Harry sacrificed himself (fulfilling one side of "either must die") and Voldemort's Killing Curse destroyed the Horcrux inside Harry, while Harry's sacrifice protected everyone. The final confrontation resulted in Voldemort's death when the Elder Wand refused to kill its true master.
