A Howler is a magical letter that shouts its message at the recipient at tremendous volume, designed for maximum public humiliation.
๐จ Appearance
- Red envelope or letter
- Smokes at the corners when it arrives
- Gets hotter and starts to smolder if not opened
- Eventually explodes if ignored
๐ข When Opened
A Howler delivers its message:
- Screams at 100 times normal volume
- Speaks in the sender's voice
- Everyone nearby can hear it clearly
- Explodes and burns itself after delivering the message
- Leaves the recipient mortified
๐ด Ron's Howler
The most famous Howler in the series came from Mrs. Weasley to Ron after he and Harry stole the flying car:
"RONALD WEASLEY! HOW DARE YOU STEAL THAT CAR! I AM ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED! YOUR FATHER'S NOW FACING AN INQUIRY AT WORK, AND IT'S ENTIRELY YOUR FAULT! IF YOU PUT ANOTHER TOE OUT OF LINE, WE'LL BRING YOU STRAIGHT HOME!"
Then it turned to address Harry in a much gentler voice, ending with wishes that he would have a good year. The entire Great Hall heard every word.

Howlers serve several purposes:
- Public humiliation and shame
- Delivering important urgent messages
- Expressing extreme anger or disappointment
- Making sure the recipient can't ignore the message

If the recipient doesn't open a Howler promptly:
- It gets hotter and hotter
- Starts smoking more intensely
- Eventually explodes with even worse consequences
- The explosion is more embarrassing than just opening it

๐ฏ Other Notable Howlers
Petunia's Howler: After the Dementor attack, Petunia received a Howler containing only the message "Remember my last, Petunia." This was from Dumbledore, reminding her of the protection Harry had at Privet Drive.
Neville's Howler: His grandmother sent him one, probably about losing or forgetting something. It caused him extreme anxiety before he opened it.
