The Battle of the Seven Potters
July 27, 1997 - The Flight from Privet Drive
Overview
The Battle of the Seven Potters was a mid-air skirmish fought on the night of July 27, 1997, when the Order of the Phoenix moved Harry Potter from his aunt and uncle's home to a safe location. Using Polyjuice Potion, six Order members took Harry's appearance to confuse pursuing Death Eaters. The battle resulted in one death, multiple injuries, and revealed a shocking betrayal within the Order's ranks.

Timeline of Events
The Trace and Protection
Harry was protected at Privet Drive by ancient blood magic from his mother's sacrifice, maintained by living with his mother's sister Petunia. The protection would break on his seventeenth birthday (July 31st) when he became an adult wizard. Additionally, the Trace (Ministry tracking of underage magic) would end, allowing him to use magic freely.
The Plan
The Order of the Phoenix planned to move Harry on July 27th, four days before his birthday, to surprise Voldemort who would expect movement on the 31st. Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody devised the Seven Potters plan: six volunteers would take Polyjuice Potion to become identical copies of Harry, creating confusion among pursuing Death Eaters.
The Seven Potters
At Number Four, Privet Drive, the Order assembled. Six members drank Polyjuice Potion containing Harry's hair: Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Fred Weasley, George Weasley, Fleur Delacour, and Mundungus Fletcher. All seven "Harrys" would fly to different safe locations with protectors, to confuse Death Eaters about which was real.
The Fourteen Fighters
The pairs:
β’ Real Harry with Hagrid (flying Sirius's motorbike)
β’ Hermione-Harry with Kingsley Shacklebolt (Thestral)
β’ Ron-Harry with Nymphadora Tonks (Thestral)
β’ Fred-Harry with Arthur Weasley (Thestral)
β’ George-Harry with Remus Lupin (Thestral)
β’ Fleur-Harry with Bill Weasley (Thestral)
β’ Mundungus-Harry with Alastor Moody (Thestral)
Ambush Immediate
The moment they left the protective enchantments of Privet Drive, thirty or more Death Eaters and Voldemort himself were waiting. Someone had betrayed the Order and revealed the plan. The Death Eaters knew the date, time, and method of transport - but not which Harry was real.
Voldemort Hunts Harry
Voldemort personally pursued who he believed was the real Harry (he was correct - Harry was with Hagrid). Dozens of Death Eaters attacked the other pairs. The sky erupted with curses: green Killing Curses, Stunning Spells, and defensive magic. All seven pairs were under intense attack.
Mad-Eye Moody Killed
Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody and Mundungus Fletcher were attacked by multiple Death Eaters. When Voldemort appeared, Mundungus panicked and Disapparated immediately, abandoning Moody. Without his partner to protect, Moody was hit by a Killing Curse and fell from his broomstick. His body was never recovered.
George Weasley's Ear
George and Remus Lupin were pursued by multiple Death Eaters. Severus Snape (whom the Order didn't know was a Death Eater) aimed a Sectumsempra curse at a Death Eater about to kill Lupin but missed and hit George. The curse sliced off George's ear. Despite the injury and blood loss, they escaped.
Harry Reveals Himself
Voldemort dueled Harry in mid-air. When a Death Eater was about to cast a Killing Curse at Hagrid, Harry instinctively shouted "Expelliarmus!" - his signature spell. Voldemort realized this was the real Harry. This confirmed Harry's identity but also saved Hagrid's life.
The Wands Connect
When Voldemort attempted to kill Harry, their twin-core wands (both containing phoenix feathers from Fawkes) connected in Priori Incantatem. Golden flames erupted between them. Harry's wand acted on its own, regurgitating golden flames at Voldemort. This rare magical phenomenon saved Harry's life.
The Motorbike Falls
As Voldemort pursued Harry and Hagrid relentlessly, a Death Eater's curse hit the motorbike. It went into a nosedive. Hagrid activated magical defenses built into the bike - a brick wall that exploded backward, a dragon-fire burst - which scattered Death Eaters. They crashed into a pond in Tonks's parents' garden.
Other Pairs' Escapes
Most pairs fought off Death Eaters and reached safe houses:
β’ Hermione & Kingsley - fought off Death Eaters successfully
β’ Ron & Tonks - attacked but escaped
β’ Fred & Arthur - Mr. Weasley was injured by a curse
β’ George & Lupin - George lost his ear but survived
β’ Fleur & Bill - fought their way free
β’ Mundungus abandoned Moody and disappeared
Regrouping at the Burrow
All pairs except Moody and Mundungus eventually arrived at the Burrow. The joy of survival was overshadowed by grief over Moody's death and anger at the betrayal. The Order debated who could have revealed the plan. Suspicion fell on various members, creating painful distrust.
Participants and Their Fates
The Seven "Harrys" and Their Protectors
Real Harry Potter & Hagrid
Transport: Flying motorbike
Outcome: Attacked by Voldemort himself. Survived the battle but motorbike destroyed. Harry's wand acted independently to save him.
Hermione-Harry & Kingsley Shacklebolt
Transport: Thestral
Outcome: Fought off multiple Death Eaters successfully. Both arrived safely. Kingsley's powerful magic kept them protected.
Ron-Harry & Nymphadora Tonks
Transport: Thestral
Outcome: Attacked by Death Eaters but escaped. Ron was shaken but unharmed. Tonks got them to safety.
Fred-Harry & Arthur Weasley
Transport: Thestral
Outcome: Arthur was hit by a curse but not seriously injured. Both survived. Fred remained in good spirits despite danger.
George-Harry & Remus Lupin
Transport: Thestral
Outcome: George's ear was cursed off by Snape's misdirected Sectumsempra. George survived but permanently lost the ear. Made jokes about being "holey."
Fleur-Harry & Bill Weasley
Transport: Thestral
Outcome: Fought off Death Eaters. Both survived without serious injury. Fleur's Beauxbatons training served her well.
Mundungus-Harry & Mad-Eye Moody
Transport: Thestral
Outcome: Mundungus panicked when Voldemort appeared and Disapparated, abandoning Moody. Mad-Eye was killed by a Death Eater's curse. His body was never found.
Death Eaters and Voldemort
Over thirty Death Eaters participated in the attack, including:
- Lord Voldemort - Personally hunted Harry. His wand failed against Harry's due to Priori Incantatem.
- Severus Snape - Secretly protecting the Order while maintaining cover as Death Eater. His curse accidentally hit George.
- Bellatrix Lestrange - Attacked one of the pairs with savage enthusiasm.
- Lucius Malfoy - Recently escaped from Azkaban, participated in the attack.
- Multiple unnamed Death Eaters - Attacked all seven pairs simultaneously.
The Death Eaters had been told not to kill Harry - Voldemort wanted that pleasure for himself. They were to capture or disable the other pairs but preserve Harry for their master. This restriction somewhat limited their effectiveness.
The Betrayal
The Death Eaters knew exactly when the Order would move Harry, which routes they would take, and that there would be seven Harrys. Someone with detailed knowledge of the plan had betrayed the Order.
Initially, many suspected Mundungus Fletcher for his cowardice and criminal connections. Others wondered if the information was obtained through Legilimency (mind-reading) or torture. The Order had used multiple methods to protect the secret, including only telling key members and using Confundus Charms.
The truth: Severus Snape had revealed the date to Voldemort, but deliberately gave the wrong date first (July 30th). When this was discovered, Voldemort assumed Snape was being tested and the real date was July 27th. Snape's complex double-agent role allowed him to maintain his cover while trying to minimize harm to the Order.
Additionally, Snape had suggested the Seven Potters plan to Mundungus Fletcher (using Confundus Charm), who then presented it to the Order as his own idea. This allowed Snape to inform Voldemort about the plan while appearing to have no direct connection to it.
Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody's Death
The Greatest Auror
Alastor Moody was legendary - the greatest Dark wizard catcher of his time. His magical eye could see through walls, Invisibility Cloaks, and the back of his head. He had defeated dozens of dark wizards in his career and survived countless assassination attempts.
The Plan's Architect
Moody devised the Seven Potters plan himself. His legendary paranoia made it tragically ironic that he died in a battle where the plan had been betrayed. "CONSTANT VIGILANCE!" was his motto, and he lived by it until the end.
Abandoned and Killed
When Mundungus Fletcher panicked and Disapparated, Moody was left alone against multiple Death Eaters and Voldemort. He fought bravely but was outnumbered. A Killing Curse struck him, and he fell from his broomstick. His body was never recovered.
"He died as he lived, fighting against Dark forces and protecting others. He never let his guard down - except when his partner abandoned him." - Remus Lupin
Key Magical Moments
Priori Incantatem
When Harry and Voldemort's twin-core wands met in combat, they connected in Priori Incantatem for the second time. Harry's wand acted independently, producing golden flames that overwhelmed Voldemort's wand and saved Harry's life. This demonstrated the mysterious power of the connection between the wands.
Expelliarmus - Harry's Signature
Harry's instinctive use of Expelliarmus (Disarming Spell) instead of a more aggressive spell revealed his identity to Voldemort. This preference for defensive magic over offensive curses was characteristic of Harry and would later prove significant.
The Motorbike's Magic
Sirius Black's flying motorbike had been modified with various magical defenses: a button that created a brick wall of solid matter, dragon-fire exhaust, and other surprises. These modifications, possibly added by Arthur Weasley and other Order members, helped Harry and Hagrid escape.
The Trace
The Ministry's tracking magic on underage wizards (the Trace) would break when Harry turned seventeen. This made moving him before his birthday strategically important, as afterward he could use magic freely without being tracked.
Aftermath and Consequences
The Battle of the Seven Potters had lasting impacts on the war effort:
- Mad-Eye Moody Lost - The Order lost one of its most experienced fighters and leaders. His death was a severe blow to morale.
- George Permanently Maimed - George Weasley lost his ear and would never fully recover. He joked he was now "holey" (holy), but the loss was permanent.
- Trust Eroded - The betrayal created suspicion within the Order. Members questioned each other, damaging unity at a critical time.
- Harry's Wand Mystery - The independent action of Harry's wand against Voldemort puzzled everyone, including Voldemort. This phenomenon would remain unexplained until later events revealed Harry's wand had absorbed some of Voldemort's power.
- Safe Houses Compromised - The Death Eaters now knew several Order safe house locations, requiring relocations and new security measures.
- Hedwig's Death - Harry's beloved owl Hedwig was killed during the battle, hit by a Killing Curse meant for Harry or Hagrid.
- The Dursleys Gone - This was the last time Harry would see Privet Drive. The Dursleys were moved to safety by the Order.
George Weasley's Ear
George's injury from Snape's Sectumsempra curse was permanent. The curse's dark magic prevented magical healing or regeneration - the ear was gone forever. Despite this, George maintained his humor:
"You see, I'm holy. Holey, Fred, geddit?" - George Weasley, making a joke about his missing ear despite the pain
Fred's response: "With the whole wide world of ear-related humor before you, you go for 'I'm holey.' That's pathetic."
The injury made George distinguishable from his identical twin Fred for the first time in their lives. This would make Fred's later death at the Battle of Hogwarts even more tragic - the twins were finally distinguishable just months before they were separated forever.
Hedwig's Death
During the aerial battle, Harry's snowy owl Hedwig was killed by a stray Killing Curse. She had been Harry's loyal companion since his first year at Hogwarts - his first birthday present from Hagrid, his connection to the wizarding world during summers with the Dursleys, and his faithful mail carrier.
Hedwig's death marked the end of Harry's childhood and innocence. She represented his first taste of magic and wonder. Her loss, combined with leaving Privet Drive forever, symbolized Harry's complete separation from the boy he had been.
Harry never forgot her. Years later, he would name his daughter after people he loved and lost - and Hedwig was among those losses that shaped him.
