Timeline of Events

Earlier That Day

The Infiltration Plan

Draco Malfoy, tasked by Voldemort to kill Dumbledore, repaired the Vanishing Cabinet in the Room of Requirement after a year of work. This created a passage from Borgin and Burkes in Knockturn Alley directly into Hogwarts, bypassing all protective enchantments.

Evening

Dumbledore and Harry's Departure

Dumbledore took Harry to find what he believed was one of Voldemort's Horcruxes - Slytherin's locket hidden in a cave. Before leaving, Dumbledore stationed members of the Order of the Phoenix and Dumbledore's Army to guard the school, sensing danger.

~11:30 PM

Death Eaters Enter Hogwarts

Death Eaters including Bellatrix Lestrange, Fenrir Greyback, and the Carrow siblings used the Vanishing Cabinet to enter Hogwarts. Draco led them through the castle under his Invisibility Cloak, heading for the Astronomy Tower where they would wait for Dumbledore.

~11:45 PM

The Dark Mark Rises

The Death Eaters' arrival was detected. As chaos erupted, someone (later revealed to be Gibbon) shot the Dark Mark into the sky above the Astronomy Tower - Voldemort's symbol announcing their presence. This alerted Dumbledore returning with Harry.

Midnight

Dumbledore Returns Weakened

Dumbledore and Harry returned via broomstick, seeing the Dark Mark. Dumbledore, severely weakened from drinking the potion protecting the Horcrux in the cave, ordered Harry to hide under his Invisibility Cloak and stay silent no matter what happened. They reached the top of the tower.

12:05 AM

Draco Confronts Dumbledore

Draco Malfoy appeared on the tower, disarming the wandless Dumbledore with "Expelliarmus!" (this act unknowingly made Draco the master of the Elder Wand). Draco was ordered to kill Dumbledore but hesitated, torn between his mission and his inability to commit murder. Dumbledore spoke gently to him, trying to offer protection.

12:10 AM

Death Eaters Arrive at Tower

Four more Death Eaters burst onto the tower: Amycus and Alecto Carrow, the brutal siblings; Fenrir Greyback, the savage werewolf; and a massive blond Death Eater. They urged Draco to kill Dumbledore. The savage Greyback looked forward to attacking children in the castle.

12:12 AM

Snape's Arrival and Dumbledore's Death

Severus Snape arrived on the tower. Dumbledore pleaded "Severus...please..." Snape looked at Dumbledore with hatred and revulsion, raised his wand, and cast "Avada Kedavra!" The Killing Curse hit Dumbledore, blasting him off the tower. His body fell to the grounds below.

12:13 AM

Harry's Paralysis Breaks

The Full Body-Bind Curse Dumbledore had cast on Harry under the Invisibility Cloak broke with Dumbledore's death. Enraged, Harry pursued Snape and the fleeing Death Eaters through the castle, trying to curse them.

During Battle

Fighting Throughout the Castle

Order of the Phoenix members and students fought the Death Eaters through corridors: Bill Weasley was savagely attacked by Fenrir Greyback (not a full werewolf bite but permanently scarring). Neville Longbottom fought despite being injured. Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Luna, and other DA members dueled Death Eaters. Professor McGonagall was hit by four Stunning Spells.

Casualty

Death Eater Gibbon Killed

Death Eater Gibbon was accidentally killed by a stray Killing Curse from fellow Death Eater Thorfinn Rowle during the chaotic fighting in the corridors.

12:20 AM

Snape Reveals Himself to Harry

On the grounds, Harry confronted Snape, trying to curse him. Snape easily blocked every spell. When Harry tried to use Sectumsempra (Snape's own invented curse), Snape blocked it and knocked Harry down. Snape revealed he was the Half-Blood Prince and forbade Harry from using his spells against him.

12:25 AM

Death Eaters Escape

Snape and the Death Eaters fled through the grounds. Hagrid's hut was set on fire during the escape. Snape prevented the Death Eaters from killing Harry, insisting "Potter belongs to the Dark Lord!" They escaped into the night, leaving behind death and destruction.

Casualties and Injuries

Albus Dumbledore - Killed

The greatest wizard of the age, killed by Severus Snape's Killing Curse and fell from the Astronomy Tower. His death was actually a mercy killing - Dumbledore was already dying from a curse and had asked Snape to kill him to spare Draco's soul and maintain Snape's cover.

Gibbon - Killed

Death Eater accidentally killed by Thorfinn Rowle's stray Killing Curse during the fighting in the corridors.

Bill Weasley - Severely Injured

Attacked by Fenrir Greyback (not in full werewolf form). Left with permanent facial scars and a new liking for very rare steaks. Fleur Delacour declared her love was unchanged, and they married that summer.

Minerva McGonagall - Injured

Hit by four Stunning Spells simultaneously and taken to St. Mungo's Hospital. Recovered fully.

Neville Longbottom - Injured

Suffered injuries during the battle but continued fighting bravely.

Multiple Students - Injured

Several DA members and other students were injured defending the castle from Death Eaters.

The Truth About Snape's Action

What appeared to be the ultimate betrayal was actually an act of mercy and sacrifice. Dumbledore was already dying from a curse on Marvolo Gaunt's ring (a Horcrux). He had perhaps a year to live and was in increasing pain.

Dumbledore asked Snape to kill him when the time came for several reasons: to spare Draco Malfoy from becoming a murderer and damaging his soul, to maintain Snape's position as a trusted Death Eater so he could continue spying, and to die on his own terms rather than at Voldemort's hand.

Additionally, Dumbledore planned his own death so that Snape, not Draco, would become master of the Elder Wand. He hoped this would prevent the wand's power from being used by Voldemort. However, this plan failed because Draco had already disarmed Dumbledore minutes earlier, unknowingly becoming the wand's true master.

"Severus...please..." - Dumbledore's final words, which Harry initially thought were a plea for mercy, were actually Dumbledore asking Snape to follow through with their plan.

Significance and Aftermath

The Battle of the Astronomy Tower marked the end of relative safety at Hogwarts. With Dumbledore dead, Voldemort's forces grew bolder. The Death Eaters' successful infiltration demonstrated that even Hogwarts was no longer secure.

Dumbledore's funeral was attended by hundreds from the wizarding community. Harry decided not to return to Hogwarts for his seventh year, instead dedicating himself to destroying Horcruxes and defeating Voldemort - fulfilling Dumbledore's mission.

Severus Snape became headmaster of Hogwarts the following year, with the Carrows as teachers, turning the school into a place of fear and cruelty. The true nature of Snape's loyalties and the complexity of his actions would only be revealed during the Battle of Hogwarts a year later.

The battle proved that Draco Malfoy, despite his prejudices and poor choices, was not a murderer at heart. His hesitation on the tower and his later actions during the war suggested a more complex character than initially apparent.

The Vanishing Cabinet

The key to the Death Eaters' infiltration was a pair of Vanishing Cabinets - one in the Room of Requirement at Hogwarts, the other in Borgin and Burkes in Knockturn Alley. Objects placed in one would appear in the other.

The Hogwarts cabinet had been broken years earlier when Peeves dropped it on Fred and George's orders (to help Montague who was stuck inside). Draco spent his entire sixth year secretly repairing it using instructions from Borgin. He tested it with apples and eventually a bird before finally using it to bring Death Eaters into the school.

This was how Draco fulfilled Voldemort's seemingly impossible task: not by killing Dumbledore himself, but by creating a passage that allowed Death Eaters to enter the castle undetected.
