Mundungus Fletcher
Mundungus Fletcher, known as "Dung" to his acquaintances, was a disreputable wizard who dealt in stolen goods and operated on the fringes of wizarding society. Despite his criminal tendencies, he served in both the first and second Order of the Phoenix, though his loyalty was frequently questionable.
Appearance
Mundungus was distinctly disreputable-looking:
- Short, squat build
- Long ginger hair and a droopy besom-like moustache
- Bloodshot baggy eyes
- Typically wore filthy, tattered clothing
- Reeked of stale sweat, tobacco, and alcohol
- Resembled a disreputable dog according to some descriptions
Criminal Activities
Mundungus made his living through various illegal enterprises:
- Dealt in stolen goods and contraband
- Sold items of dubious legality
- Traded in magical creatures and items
- Ran various scams and cons
- Operated a thriving black market business
- Frequently mentioned "business opportunities" that were transparently illegal
Relationship with Dumbledore
Despite his flaws, Mundungus owed Dumbledore:
- Dumbledore had helped him avoid Azkaban in the past
- This created debt of gratitude Mundungus took seriously
- Served in Order primarily out of loyalty to Dumbledore
- Dumbledore trusted him despite his criminal nature
- Their relationship showed Dumbledore's tendency to see good in everyone
Order of the Phoenix Service
Mundungus's Order work was mixed:
Tailing Harry: Assigned to watch Harry at Privet Drive during summer before fifth year. He abandoned his post to pursue a business opportunity, allowing Dementors to attack Harry. This nearly got Harry expelled and Mundungus in serious trouble with the Order.
The Seven Potters: Participated in the plan to move Harry by disguising himself as Harry with Polyjuice Potion. When Voldemort appeared, Mundungus panicked and Disapparated immediately, abandoning Mad-Eye Moody, who was killed as a result. This betrayal earned him universal contempt from Order members.
The Theft from Grimmauld Place
Mundungus's most significant crime against the Order:
- After Sirius Black's death, stole numerous Black family heirlooms from 12 Grimmauld Place
- Sold them for personal profit
- Among stolen items was Salazar Slytherin's locket (a Horcrux)
- Sold the locket to Dolores Umbridge to avoid legal trouble
- This theft inadvertently complicated Harry's Horcrux hunt significantly
Confrontation: When Harry, Ron, and Hermione tracked him down, Mundungus initially lied about the locket. Under interrogation and threats, he finally admitted selling it to Umbridge. His actions put the locket in dangerous hands and prolonged the war.
Character Flaws
Mundungus consistently demonstrated:
- Cowardice in dangerous situations
- Greed overriding loyalty
- Inability to resist criminal opportunities
- Willingness to betray trust for personal gain
- Lack of shame about his behavior
Yet Some Redeeming Qualities
Despite everything, Mundungus had occasional moments:
- Genuine loyalty to Dumbledore's memory
- Did participate in dangerous Order missions
- Eventually told the truth about the locket
- Never actually joined Death Eaters despite opportunities
- Showed guilt when confronted about his worst actions
Battle of Hogwarts
Mundungus's presence at the final battle was uncertain:
- Not confirmed to have fought
- Given his track record, likely avoided the battle
- Consistent with his pattern of fleeing danger
Harry's Complicated View
Harry's opinion of Mundungus evolved:
- Initially found him amusing in a disgusting way
- Grew angry about the abandoned guard duty
- Furious about Moody's death
- Enraged by the theft from Sirius's house
- Ultimately saw him as unreliable but not irredeemably evil
Post-War Life
- Presumably returned to criminal activities
- Likely continued operating on society's fringes
- Whether he reformed after the war is unknown
