Over a thousand years of magic
The Founding (c. 990 A.D.)
The Four Founders
Around the year 990 A.D., four of the greatest witches and wizards of the age came together to create a school where young magical people could be trained safely, away from Muggle persecution. They built the castle in the Scottish Highlands, far from Muggle eyes.
π¦ Godric Gryffindor
From wild moor. Valued bravery, daring, nerve, and chivalry. His sword (goblin-made) became a Hogwarts treasure. Sorting Hat originally his hat. Best friend with Slytherin initially.
𦑠Helga Hufflepuff
From valley broad. Valued hard work, patience, loyalty, and fair play. Brought house-elves to work at Hogwarts, treating them kindly. Her cup became a Horcrux.
π¦ Rowena Ravenclaw
From glen. Valued intelligence, learning, wisdom, and wit. Designed ever-changing floor plan of Hogwarts. Her diadem granted wisdom, was lost, became Horcrux.
π Salazar Slytherin
From fen. Valued ambition, cunning, leadership, and resourcefulness. Built Chamber of Secrets. Left school after arguing with others about only teaching pure-bloods. His locket became Horcrux.
π Early History (990-1200)
The Castle is Built
Four founders built Hogwarts Castle with help of magical creatures and house-elves. Created enchantments to hide it from Muggles. Established four houses. Created Sorting Hat (enchanted Godric's hat).
The Great Schism
Salazar Slytherin wanted to accept only pure-blood students. Others disagreed - wanted to teach all magical children. Arguments became bitter. Slytherin secretly built Chamber of Secrets with Basilisk inside. Left Hogwarts. Never returned. Founders mourned the broken friendship.
The Sorting Hat's Song
Before founders died, they enchanted the Sorting Hat to continue sorting students. It contains their intelligence and can read students' minds. Composes new song each year.
Founders' Deaths
One by one, the founders passed away. Rowena Ravenclaw's daughter Helena stole her diadem before Rowena's death. Helena killed by Bloody Baron (both became Hogwarts ghosts). School continued under new leadership.
βοΈ Medieval Period (1200-1600)
Expansion and Development
Castle expanded. More classrooms, dormitories, secret passages added. Whomping Willow not yet planted. Greenhouses built. Quidditch became school sport. Library established (restricted section added later).
Headmaster Armando Dippet?
Various headmasters served. Some portraits remain in Headmaster's office. Names mostly forgotten. School traditions continued.
Persecution of Witches
While Muggles burned witches (mostly Muggles, actual witches used Flame-Freezing Charm), Hogwarts remained safe haven. Students learned in secret. Statute of Secrecy not yet established.
π Early Modern Period (1600-1800)
Statute of Secrecy
International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy signed. Wizarding world went completely underground. Hogwarts became more important than ever as training ground. Enhanced concealment charms placed on castle.
Notable Events
O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. examinations established. House Cup competition formalized. Quidditch rules standardized. Library expanded significantly. Various headmasters came and went.
