The Unforgivable Curses are three of the most powerful and sinister spells in existence: the Imperius Curse (total control), the Cruciatus Curse (unbearable torture), and the Killing Curse (instant death). Use of any of these against another human being carries an automatic life sentence in Azkaban, with the exception of wartime authorizations by the Ministry.
