Portkeys
Magical Transportation Objects
Overview
A Portkey is an object enchanted to transport anyone who touches it to a predetermined destination at a specific time. Used for moving groups of wizards over long distances, Portkeys are heavily regulated by the Ministry of Magic.
How Portkeys Work
- Object is enchanted with specific destination
- Set to activate at predetermined time
- Anyone touching it when activated is transported
- Instant travel to destination
- Can transport multiple people simultaneously
Types of Objects Used
Deliberately Inconspicuous:
Portkeys are made from ordinary objects that Muggles would ignore:
- Old boots
- Tin cans
- Punctured footballs
- Newspapers
- Anything that looks like litter
Activation
Two methods of activation:
Timed Portkeys
- Activate at specific predetermined time
- Anyone touching at that moment transported
- Used for scheduled mass transport
- Most common type
Touch-Activated Portkeys
- Activate immediately upon touch
- More dangerous (can trap unwary)
- Used for emergency situations
- Heavily restricted
The Experience
