๐ฎ Professor Sybill Trelawney
Professor Sybill Trelawney was the Divination professor at Hogwarts, known for her dramatic predictions and two genuine prophecies that changed history.
๐ Appearance
Trelawney had a distinctive appearance:
- Very thin and ethereal-looking
- Enormous glasses that magnified her eyes to several times their size
- Draped in gauzy, spangled shawls
- Covered in chains, beads, bangles, and rings
- Often wore large, glittering glasses
- Resided in a tower classroom perfumed with incense
๐ Teaching Style
Her Divination classes were theatrical and often inaccurate:
- Constantly predicted students' deaths (especially Harry's)
- Taught tea leaf reading, crystal ball gazing, dream interpretation
- Spoke in a misty, ethereal voice
- Created an atmosphere of mysticism and doom
- Most predictions were vague and wrong
Hermione quit her class, declaring Divination "woolly" and imprecise.
๐ The Two Real Prophecies
Despite her many false predictions, Trelawney made two genuine prophecies in a trance state:
The First Prophecy (1980): About Harry and Voldemort, made during her job interview with Dumbledore. She predicted that one born at the end of July would have the power to vanquish the Dark Lord, and that neither could live while the other survived. This set the entire series in motion.
The Second Prophecy (1994): In front of Harry, she predicted that Voldemort's servant would return to him and help him rise again. This foretold Peter Pettigrew's reunion with Voldemort.
She had no memory of either prophecy afterward - true Sight worked through her without her awareness.
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ง Ancestry
Trelawney was the great-great-granddaughter of Cassandra Trelawney, a celebrated Seer. She traded heavily on this connection, though she inherited little of her ancestor's genuine gift. She desperately wanted to live up to her family legacy.
๐ข Umbridge's Cruelty
Dolores Umbridge attempted to fire Trelawney, publicly humiliating her by forcing her to leave Hogwarts with her belongings. Dumbledore intervened, allowing her to remain at the castle even though he couldn't prevent her dismissal as a teacher.
Trelawney was devastated and began drinking cooking sherry to cope. This showed genuine vulnerability beneath her theatrical exterior.
๐บ Drinking Problem
After her dismissal and during stressful times, Trelawney turned to alcohol:
- Drank cooking sherry excessively
- Became more unstable and emotional
- Made even more dramatic predictions
- Showed her genuine fear and insecurity
โ๏ธ Battle of Hogwarts
During the Battle, Trelawney fought bravely:
- Threw crystal balls at Death Eaters from the top of the stairs
- Accidentally knocked out Fenrir Greyback with a crystal ball
- Defended the castle despite not being known as a combatant
Her unexpected courage showed there was more to her than theatrical predictions.
๐ญ Tragic Figure
Trelawney was somewhat tragic:
- Desperately wanted to be taken seriously as a Seer
- Made dramatic false predictions to maintain credibility
- Actually possessed genuine Sight she couldn't control
- Lived isolated in her tower, rarely descending to the main school
- Was mocked by students and some teachers
Dumbledore protected her partly because her prophecy was genuine, and partly out of kindness to someone who was more vulnerable than she appeared.
