π¦ Dudley Dursley
Dudley Dursley was Harry Potter's cousin, the spoiled son of Vernon and Petunia Dursley, who eventually showed unexpected character growth.
π Extreme Spoiling
Dudley was given everything he wanted:
- 36 presents for his 11th birthday (one fewer than last year - he had a tantrum)
- Two bedrooms (one for sleeping, one for toys)
- A new computer, television, and VCR
- Expensive new clothes constantly
- Any food he wanted, whenever he wanted
His parents' indulgence created a monster of entitlement.
π Bullying
Dudley led a gang that bullied smaller children:
- Physically intimidated other kids
- Made Harry's life miserable
- Used his size and parents' protection to avoid consequences
- Participated in "Harry Hunting" with his friends
His favorite punching bag was Harry, whom he beat up regularly with his gang's support.
π Physical Transformation
Dudley's appearance changed dramatically over the years:
- Early years: Looked like "a pig in a wig," extremely fat
- Later years: Took up boxing, became more muscular but still very large
- Face: Had very little neck, with his large head resting on his shoulders
His parents insisted he was "just big-boned" despite clear obesity.
π± The Dementor Attack
Everything changed when Dementors attacked Dudley in an alleyway. The Dementor forced him to relive his worst memories and nearly performed the Kiss on him. Harry's Patronus saved his life.
The Dementor made Dudley confront who he really was - and he was horrified by what he saw. This traumatic event began his transformation.
π Character Growth
After the Dementor attack, Dudley gradually changed:
- Stopped bullying Harry
- Left tea outside Harry's door
- Showed concern for Harry's safety
- Stood up to his parents about Harry
- Thanked Harry for saving his life before leaving
In their final parting, Dudley shook Harry's hand and said, "I don't think you're a waste of space." For Dudley, this was a profound statement.
π€ Reconciliation
Years later, Dudley and Harry remained on Christmas card terms. Dudley had matured enough to feel genuine gratitude that Harry saved his life and regret for how he'd treated him.
The Dementor showed Dudley his worst self, and unlike many people, he chose to change.
π What Made Him Change
Dudley asked Harry a profound question after the attack: "What did the Dementor make you see?" This showed he was trying to understand Harry's experience and perspective - perhaps for the first time ever.
The Dementor forced Dudley to confront the truth about himself: that he was cruel, spoiled, and wasted. Most importantly, it showed him how he appeared to others, particularly to Harry.
