๐ Vernon Dursley
Vernon Dursley was Harry Potter's Muggle uncle who took him in after his parents' death, though he treated Harry with neglect and cruelty for over a decade.
๐ผ Career
Vernon was a director at Grunnings, a firm that made drills. He prided himself on being "perfectly normal" and having a successful business career. He drove a company car and conducted himself with what he considered proper respectability.
๐ 4 Privet Drive
Vernon was master of 4 Privet Drive, a meticulously maintained house in Little Whinging, Surrey. He was obsessed with appearing normal to the neighbors and maintaining his reputation as an upstanding, ordinary citizen.
๐ค Hatred of Magic
Vernon despised anything unusual or abnormal, with particular hatred for magic:
- Refused to acknowledge magic's existence
- Punished Harry for any mention of magic
- Tried to prevent Harry from attending Hogwarts
- Treated wizards with contempt and fear
- Made Harry hide his magical nature from others
His hatred stemmed partly from jealousy - his wife's sister Lily had magical abilities while he remained resolutely ordinary.
๐ฆ Treatment of Harry
Vernon treated Harry terribly:
- Made him live in a cupboard under the stairs
- Gave him Dudley's hand-me-down clothes
- Fed him less than the family
- Punished him for unexplained magical incidents
- Told him his parents died in a car crash (a lie)
- Never showed him affection or kindness
- Tried to prevent him from receiving his Hogwarts letter
๐ญ Personality
- Narrow-minded: Refused to accept anything outside his worldview
- Bullying: Used his size and authority to intimidate
- Cowardly: Feared magic despite mocking it
- Materialistic: Obsessed with possessions and status
- Hypocritical: Claimed respectability while treating Harry cruelly
๐ฎ Hogwarts Letters
When Harry's Hogwarts letters started arriving, Vernon went to increasingly desperate lengths to stop them:
- Burned the first letter
- Boarded up the mail slot
- Fled to a hotel
- Finally escaped to a hut on a rock in the sea
His efforts were futile - Hagrid personally delivered Harry's letter on his 11th birthday.
๐ฆ Facing Wizards
Vernon's confrontations with wizards showed his true nature:
- Yelled at and insulted Hagrid (who responded by giving Dudley a pig's tail)
- Tried to prevent Harry from returning to Hogwarts each year
- Refused to host Dumbledore or acknowledge the magical protection
- Panicked when confronted by wizards at Kings Cross
- Eventually accepted the Order's protection out of fear
๐ Parting with Harry
When the Order evacuated the Dursleys for their protection, Vernon initially refused to go, believing it was a trick to steal his house. Eventually, fear of Voldemort convinced him.
Dudley showed some humanity in their parting, but Vernon remained cold to the end, showing no affection or regret for how he'd treated Harry.
