๐ง Merlin - The Most Famous Wizard

Order of Merlin
The highest honor awarded to witches and wizards for achievement or bravery. Three classes: First (greatest bravery/achievement), Second (distinguished service), and Third (notable contribution). Dumbledore won First Class; Lockhart bought Third Class.
Cultural Impact
Wizards regularly invoke Merlin's name in expressions of surprise or dismay. "Merlin's beard!" is common. His image appears on Chocolate Frog cards. Students learn about him in History of Magic.
Slytherin House
Notably, Merlin was a Slytherin, contradicting assumptions that all great wizards were Gryffindors. This fact highlights that greatness can come from any house.
๐ฎ Morgan le Fay (Morgana)
Morgan le Fay, also known as Morgana, was a medieval Dark witch who appears in Arthurian legend. She is remembered in wizarding history as a powerful and dangerous witch, featured on Chocolate Frog cards.
Historical Role
Known for practicing Dark Arts and featuring prominently in medieval magical history. Often depicted as Merlin's adversary in the Arthurian legends. Her magical power was formidable enough that she remains famous over a thousand years later.
๐ฐ The Four Founders of Hogwarts
Over a thousand years ago, four of the greatest witches and wizards of the age came together to create Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Each brought unique talents and values that define the school's four houses.
๐ฆ Godric Gryffindor
Era: Medieval (c. 990s)
Values: Bravery, daring, nerve, chivalry
Artifacts: The Sword of Gryffindor (goblin-made, appears to worthy Gryffindors in need) and the Sorting Hat (originally his hat)
Legacy: Gryffindor Tower, his portrait hangs in Dumbledore's office. The sword destroyed multiple Horcruxes.
๐ฆ Rowena Ravenclaw
Era: Medieval (c. 990s)
Values: Intelligence, wisdom, wit, learning
Artifacts: Ravenclaw's Diadem (enhanced wisdom, later became a Horcrux). Famous for designing Hogwarts' ever-changing floor plan.
Tragedy: Her daughter Helena stole the diadem and fled to Albania. Eventually murdered by the Bloody Baron.
๐ฆก Helga Hufflepuff
Era: Medieval (c. 990s)
Values: Hard work, loyalty, patience, fair play
Artifacts: Hufflepuff's Cup (golden with badger engravings, later became a Horcrux destroyed by Hermione)
Legacy: Known for taking students others wouldn't. House elves in the kitchen use her recipes.
๐ Salazar Slytherin
Era: Medieval (c. 990s)
Values: Ambition, cunning, resourcefulness, pure-blood heritage
Artifacts: The locket (later became Horcrux), ability to speak Parseltongue passed to descendants
Controversy: Built Chamber of Secrets with a Basilisk to purge Muggle-borns. Left Hogwarts after quarreling with other founders.
The Split
The four founders worked harmoniously initially, but Slytherin's belief that only pure-blood students should attend Hogwarts caused irreconcilable differences with the other founders. He secretly built the Chamber of Secrets before departing, intending for his heir to one day open it and purge the school of Muggle-borns.
The Sorting Hat's Origins
Originally Godric Gryffindor's hat, the four founders enchanted it together with their knowledge so it could continue sorting students after their deaths. Each founder contributed their preferences and values. The hat can see into students' minds and place them accordingly, sometimes taking the student's choice into account.
โ๏ธ Nicolas Flamel - The Alchemist
Nicolas Flamel is the only known creator of the Philosopher's Stone, an alchemical substance that produces the Elixir of Life and turns any metal into pure gold. His existence proves that alchemy is real magic, not pseudoscience.
Life and Achievements
The Philosopher's Stone
Created the legendary Philosopher's Stone through alchemical genius. The stone produces the Elixir of Life, granting immortality as long as the drinker continues taking the elixir. Also transmutes base metals into gold.
Partnership with Dumbledore
Close friend and correspondent of Albus Dumbledore. Their work on alchemy included the twelve uses of dragon's blood. The stone was kept at Gringotts, then moved to Hogwarts for safekeeping.
Final Decision
When Voldemort attempted to steal the stone in 1992, Flamel agreed with Dumbledore to destroy it. He and his wife Perenelle set their affairs in order and passed away peacefully, having lived over six centuries.
Legacy
Featured on Chocolate Frog cards. Remembered as the greatest alchemist who ever lived. His work with Dumbledore advanced magical knowledge significantly.
โก Gellert Grindelwald - The Dark Wizard
Gellert Grindelwald was one of the most dangerous Dark wizards in history, second only to Voldemort. His reign of terror across Europe in the 1930s-40s ended with his legendary duel against Albus Dumbledore in 1945.

Student Years
Attended Durmstrang Institute, known for teaching Dark Arts. Showed brilliant magical talent but was expelled for dangerous experiments on fellow students. Carved the Deathly Hallows symbol into a wall at Durmstrang.
Friendship with Dumbledore (1899)
Met young Albus Dumbledore in Godric's Hollow. The two brilliant young wizards became close friends, bonding over the Deathly Hallows quest and ideas about wizard supremacy "for the greater good." Their friendship ended tragically after a three-way duel involving Albus, Aberforth, and Grindelwald resulted in Ariana Dumbledore's death.
The Quest for Power
Stole the Elder Wand from wandmaker Gregorovitch. Used its power to become one of the most dangerous Dark wizards ever. Built the prison fortress Nurmengard with the motto "For the Greater Good" over the entrance.
Reign of Terror (1920s-1945)
Led a violent revolution seeking wizard domination over Muggles. Gathered followers across Europe. Committed mass murders and terrorized both Muggle and magical communities. His philosophy of "for the greater good" justified terrible atrocities.
The Legendary Duel (1945)
Dumbledore, despite his reluctance and their former friendship, finally confronted Grindelwald. Their duel became legendary as the greatest wizard duel ever witnessed. Dumbledore won, claimed the Elder Wand's allegiance, and imprisoned Grindelwald in his own fortress.
Imprisonment and Death (1945-1998)
Spent over 50 years in Nurmengard. By the time Voldemort visited seeking information about the Elder Wand, Grindelwald showed possible remorse. Refused to reveal where Dumbledore was buried (where the wand was). Voldemort killed him in rage. Died protecting Dumbledore's grave.
Philosophy and Ideology
Grindelwald believed wizards should rule over Muggles "for the greater good." Unlike Voldemort's pure-blood supremacy, Grindelwald's vision was about magical ability regardless of blood status. His slogan justified his atrocities as necessary for a better world. The parallels to real-world fascism in the 1940s are deliberate.
