𧦠Dobby the House-Elf
Dobby was a house-elf who served the Malfoy family until Harry Potter freed him, after which he became one of Harry's most loyal friends.
π° Service to the Malfoys
Dobby served the Malfoy family for many years, suffering terrible abuse at their hands. Lucius Malfoy treated him with cruelty, and the family regularly mistreated him. As a house-elf, Dobby was magically bound to serve his masters and could not disobey direct orders.
However, Dobby could use loopholes. When he learned that the Malfoys were planning to reopen the Chamber of Secrets (via Tom Riddle's diary), he tried to warn and protect Harry, even though this went against his masters' interests.
β οΈ Warning Harry
Dobby appeared at Privet Drive before Harry's second year, desperately trying to prevent him from returning to Hogwarts. He:
- Smashed a pudding in the Dursleys' kitchen (getting Harry in trouble)
- Sealed the barrier at Platform 9ΒΎ (with Kreacher's help)
- Cursed a Bludger to attack Harry during Quidditch
All of this was to protect Harry from the danger he knew was coming, even though he couldn't reveal the details due to magical restrictions.
𧦠Freedom
Harry freed Dobby through a clever trick. After discovering that the diary belonged to Lucius Malfoy, Harry hid his own sock inside it and returned the diary to Lucius. When Lucius disgustedly threw it aside, Dobby caught it - and in doing so, received clothing from his master, the traditional way to free a house-elf.
Dobby was overcome with joy and gratitude. He was finally free.
πΌ Working at Hogwarts
After gaining freedom, Dobby struggled to find work - most wizarding families wanted traditional enslaved house-elves, not free ones who demanded pay. Eventually, Dumbledore hired Dobby to work in the Hogwarts kitchens, paying him one Galleon a week and giving him one day off per month (Dobby had requested higher pay and more time off, but moderated his demands after Hermione explained they were excessive by house-elf standards).
π§Ά Eccentric Fashion
As a free elf, Dobby embraced his ability to wear clothes, assembling bizarre outfits:
- Multiple socks (of different colors and patterns)
- Tea cozies as hats
- Scarves
- Shorts
- Everything mismatched and enthusiastically worn
His appearance shocked other house-elves, who viewed clothes as shameful.
π Loyalty to Harry
Dobby remained fiercely loyal to Harry:
- Warned him about the Tournament dangers
- Gave him Gillyweed for the Second Task
- Helped find the Room of Requirement for Dumbledore's Army
- Tailed Draco Malfoy for weeks to help Harry
- Called Harry "his most favorite person in the whole world"
π Heroic Death
When Harry and his friends were captured and taken to Malfoy Manor, Dobby came to rescue them. He Disapparated them to Shell Cottage, but as they were leaving, Bellatrix Lestrange threw her knife. It struck Dobby in the chest.
Dobby died in Harry's arms on the beach, his last words being "Harry Potter." Harry dug Dobby's grave by hand, without magic, to honor his friend properly. He marked it with a headstone reading: "HERE LIES DOBBY, A FREE ELF."
