Overview
Apparition is one of the most complex forms of magical transportation. Due to the dangers involvedùparticularly splinchingùthe Ministry strictly regulates Apparition through mandatory licensing and testing.
Legal Requirements
Wizards must be at least 17 years old to obtain an Apparition license. Unlicensed Apparition carries fines up to 50 Galleons.
The Learning Process
At Hogwarts, sixth-year students may take lessons (12 Galleons) taught by Ministry instructor Wilkie Twycross using the Three Ds:
- Destination - Fix mind on desired location
- Determination - Move with deliberate purpose
- Deliberation - Turn on spot, feeling through space
The Test
Administered by Ministry examiner, includes written component and practical examination. Must demonstrate complete Apparition with no splinching. Approximately 40% fail first attempt, usually due to minor splinching or arriving outside target zone.
Notable Experiences
- Harry Potter - Missed his test due to events surrounding Dumbledores death. Learned during Horcrux hunt without license.
- Ron Weasley - Severe splinching during 1997, losing part of arm. Healed with dittany.
- Hermione - Passed first attempt, demonstrated excellent skill.
Types of Apparition
Side-Along Apparition
Licensed wizard may bring unlicensed individuals by maintaining physical contact. Common for adults bringing children or emergency evacuations.
Dangers
Splinching occurs when wizard fails to transport entire body. Ranges from minor (eyebrows) to severe (limbs). Treated at St. Mungos Splinching Ward.
Restrictions
Anti-Disapparition Jinxes protect locations like Hogwarts, Ministry, and Gringotts.
