The Wand Chooses the Wizard
Introduction to Wands
A wand is a quasi-sentient magical instrument through which a witch or wizard channels their magic. It is made from wood and contains a magical core. The wand chooses the wizard based on an ineffable connection between wand and wielder.
Mr. Ollivander's Philosophy
"The wand chooses the wizard, Mr. Potter. It's not always clear why."
"The wand chooses the wizard... that much has always been clear to those of us who have studied wandlore."
β Garrick Ollivander
Wand Woods
Each wand wood has unique characteristics and affinities for certain types of magic or personality traits. Ollivander and other wandmakers have cataloged these properties over centuries.
Holly
Harry Potter's wand
Holly is rare, protective, and traditionally associated with repelling evil. Works best for those engaged in spiritual or dangerous quests. Holly wands choose masters who are involved in perilous missions.
Vine
Hermione Granger's wand
Vine wands seek witches and wizards with hidden depths, greater purposes, and vision beyond the ordinary. Hermione's vine wand matched her destiny as a key figure in the war.
Ash
Ron Weasley's second wand
Ash wands bond strongly with their original owner and should never be passed on. They lose power if gifted or stolen. Matches courageous, stubborn wizards who won't be swayed from beliefs.
Yew
Voldemort's wand
Yew wands are among the rarest, with power for both life and death. They give their owners the power to be both protector and destroyer. Infamous wielders - but also heroes.
Elder
The rarest wand wood, notoriously difficult to master and unlucky. The Elder Wand is the only known elder wand. Powerful but dangerous, attracted to ambitious wizards.
Willow
Lily Potter, Ron Weasley (first)
Willow wands have healing power and choose wielders with insecurity they must overcome. Best results with those who have unwarranted doubts about themselves.
Hawthorn
Draco Malfoy's wand
Complex, intriguing wands. Work particularly well for healing magic but also curses. Match wizards experiencing inner conflict or turmoil.
Mahogany
James Potter's wand
Suited to transformation work. Matches witches and wizards who are natural leaders.
Walnut
Bellatrix Lestrange's wand
Highly intelligent wands that match equally intelligent wizards. Capable of great magic in skilled hands.
Cedar
Cho Chang's likely wood
Cedar wands find owners with strength of character and unusual loyalty. Very difficult to deceive.
Elm
Produces magic most elegant and refined. Matches wizards with native dignity, magical dexterity, and certain grace.
Blackthorn
Wands for warriors. Best suited to those who have faced adversity. Becomes truly bonded with current owner only after a notable danger is shared.
Wand Cores
The core is the heart of the wand - the source of its magical power. Ollivander uses only three "Supreme Cores."
π¦ Phoenix Feather
Harry & Voldemort's wands
The rarest core. Capable of the greatest range of magic. Take longest to reveal allegiance. Show most initiative, sometimes acting on their own. Pickiest about owners.
Fawkes gave only two feathers - both became brother wands.
π¦ Unicorn Hair
Cedric Diggory, Neville Longbottom, Draco Malfoy
Most faithful of cores, bonds strongly with first owner. Least likely to fluctuate in allegiance. Produce consistent magic. Difficult to turn to Dark Arts. Most resistant to wearing out.
π Dragon Heartstring
Hermione Granger, Bellatrix Lestrange
Produce most powerful magic. Learn quickly. Can change allegiance easier than unicorn or phoenix cores. Easiest to turn to Dark Arts (though won't do so naturally). Most prone to accidents.
π Thestral Tail Hair
The Elder Wand
Unstable, tricky to master. Can only be seen by those who've witnessed death. Older wand makers refused to use them due to their "unlucky" reputation. The Elder Wand is the most famous.
Other Cores (Used by Other Wandmakers)
- π₯ Veela Hair - Temperamental, used in Fleur Delacour's wand
- π Basilisk Horn - Extremely rare, produces powerful Dark magic
- π¦ Kelpie Hair - Easily uncontrollable
- π¦ Thunderbird Tail Feather - Can sense danger, cast curses without command
- π¦ Kneazle Whisker - Produces quirky magic

Wand Allegiance & Ownership
Wands are loyal to their true master. While a wand will work for anyone who picks it up, it performs best for its rightful owner. Allegiance can change through:
Ways to Win a Wand:
- βοΈ Disarmament: Using Expelliarmus or physically taking the wand
- π‘οΈ Defeating the owner: Even without taking their wand directly
- π Killing the owner: Though this doesn't always work (see Elder Wand)
- π Winning consent: The owner willingly gives allegiance (rare)
The Problem with Stolen Wands:
Taking a wand without defeating its owner (theft, finding a lost wand) means the wand won't fully bond. It will work but not at full power. This is why Ron's first wand (Charlie's hand-me-down) never worked well for him.
Exception - The Elder Wand:
The Elder Wand only transfers allegiance through defeat, never through murder. This is why:
- Snape killed Dumbledore but wasn't its master (Draco had already disarmed Dumbledore)
- Voldemort killed Snape but didn't become its master
- Harry disarmed Draco and became the true master, though he never physically held the Elder Wand until much later
Brother Wands: Priori Incantatem
When two wands share a core from the same source (like Harry and Voldemort's phoenix feather wands from Fawkes), they cannot properly duel each other. If forced to fight, a rare effect called Priori Incantatem occurs.
What Happens:
- π The wands lock together with a golden thread of light
- πΆ Phoenix song fills the air
- π» "Echo" forms appear - shadows of the most recent spells cast
- β‘ For Killing Curses, "ghosts" of the victims appear
- π― The stronger-willed wizard can force the connection
Graveyard Duel (Book 4):
When Harry and Voldemort dueled in the graveyard, Priori Incantatem revealed:
- Cedric Diggory (just killed)
- An old man (Frank Bryce)
- Bertha Jorkins
- James Potter
- Lily Potter
The "echoes" helped Harry escape, showing wands have deeper magic than most wizards understand.
Wandless Magic
While wands are the primary magical tool in Britain and much of Europe, magic can be performed without them:
Accidental Magic
Young witches and wizards perform wandless magic unconsciously when emotional. Harry freed the snake at the zoo, inflated Marge, and grew his hair back - all without a wand.
Non-Verbal Magic
Advanced wizards can cast spells without speaking. Dumbledore, Snape, and Voldemort frequently used non-verbal magic. Requires concentration and skill.
True Wandless Magic
Extremely difficult. Most wizards cannot do it. Dumbledore could conjure fire wandlessly. African wizards are noted to be skilled at wandless magic.
House-Elf Magic
House-elves perform all magic without wands. Their magic is different from wizard magic and very powerful within their domain.
Ollivanders: Makers of Fine Wands since 382 B.C.
The Ollivander Family
Britain's premier wandmaker family for over 2,000 years. The shop in Diagon Alley is narrow and shabby but filled with thousands of wand boxes.
Garrick Ollivander
Current proprietor. Brilliant wandmaker who remembers every wand he's ever sold. Eyes like moons. Captured by Death Eaters in 1996 and imprisoned in Malfoy Manor until rescued by Harry in 1998.
Other Wandmakers
Gregorovitch - European wandmaker, made Viktor Krum's wand. Had the Elder Wand before Grindelwald stole it.
Mykew Gregorovitch - Tried to duplicate Elder Wand's power.
Arturo Cephalopos - Another British wandmaker.
Jimmy Kiddell - Maker of specialty wands.
Wand Flexibility
Flexibility indicates the degree of adaptability and willingness to change in the wand-and-owner pairing:
| Flexibility | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Unyielding | Very difficult to change allegiance. Stubborn. Hermione's wand. |
| Unbending | Rigid, matches inflexible personalities. |
| Rigid | Little adaptability, strong initial bond. |
| Reasonably Supple | Moderate flexibility, balanced. |
| Supple | Good adaptability while maintaining loyalty. Harry's wand. |
| Pliant | Very adaptable, matches flexible personalities. |
| Springy | Bounces back from challenges, resilient. |
| Swishy | Particularly good for charm work. Lily's wand. |
Ollivander's Wisdom
"The wand chooses the wizard, Mr. Potter."
"Curious indeed how these things happen. The wand chooses the wizard, remember... I think we must expect great things from you, Mr. Potter... After all, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named did great things β terrible, yes, but great."
"The wand of holly would be most suited to one engaged in a perilous quest, and Yew most suited to a wizard who would be likely to meet his death in a most unfortunate manner."
Wand Length
Wand length correlates somewhat with the wizard's physical stature, but more importantly with their personality:
- πͺ Shorter wands (under 9"): Rare, match wizards who lack something in character
- πͺ 9-12 inches: Most common range, average personalities
- πͺ 12-14 inches: Larger personality, more theatrical magic
- πͺ Over 15 inches: Very rare, match physically large wizards or those with "larger than life" personalities. Hagrid's wand was 16 inches before it was broken.
Notable Facts
- π° Wands cost 7 Galleons at Ollivanders

The Essence of Wandlore
Wandlore is one of the most complex and mysterious branches of magic. Even experts like Ollivander admit there is much they don't understand. The relationship between wand and wizard is deeply personal, quasi-sentient, and unpredictable.
What's certain: the wand chooses the wizard. And when that perfect match is made, extraordinary magic becomes possible.
