π± Crookshanks
Crookshanks is Hermione Granger's pet cat, a large ginger feline who is part Kneazle and possesses remarkable intelligence.
πͺ Purchase
Hermione bought Crookshanks from the Magical Menagerie in Diagon Alley before her third year at Hogwarts. The witch at the shop mentioned he had been there for quite a long time as no one wanted him. Hermione immediately fell in love with his squashed face and bottlebrush tail.
π¨ Appearance
- Large, ginger-colored cat
- Squashed, flat face
- Bottlebrush tail
- Bandy legs
- Yellow, lamp-like eyes
- Part Kneazle (magical cat-like creature)
π§ Intelligence
Crookshanks demonstrated exceptional intelligence, far beyond that of a normal cat:
- Recognized Peter Pettigrew in his Animagus form as Scabbers
- Worked with Sirius Black to catch Pettigrew
- Could detect when people were untrustworthy
- Understood complex situations and acted accordingly
- Able to press the knot on the Whomping Willow to freeze it
π The Scabbers Incident
From the moment they met, Crookshanks relentlessly pursued Ron's rat Scabbers. This caused significant friction between Ron and Hermione, with Ron believing Crookshanks was trying to kill his pet out of predatory instinct.
In reality, Crookshanks had recognized that Scabbers was not actually a rat but Peter Pettigrew in disguise. His Kneazle heritage gave him the ability to detect deception. He was working with Sirius Black to capture Pettigrew, the true betrayer of Harry's parents.
πΎ Partnership with Sirius
Crookshanks helped Sirius Black communicate with the castle and plan to capture Pettigrew:
- Took orders from Sirius to steal passwords
- Led Sirius to the Whomping Willow entrance
- Helped press the knot to freeze the tree
- Cornered Pettigrew multiple times
Sirius later commented that Crookshanks was the most intelligent cat he'd ever met.
𧬠Kneazle Heritage
Being part Kneazle gave Crookshanks special abilities:
- Detect untrustworthy people: Could sense when someone was suspicious or dangerous
- Enhanced intelligence: Problem-solving abilities beyond normal cats
- Independent nature: Made his own decisions
- Loyalty: Fiercely devoted to Hermione
π Ron's Perspective
Ron never truly forgave Crookshanks for the Scabbers incident, even after learning the truth. The cat made Ron nervous, and they maintained a tense relationship throughout the series. However, Ron eventually came to grudging acceptance that Crookshanks had been right all along.
