The Transformation
The Great Hall walls are covered in glittering silver frost. Hundreds of ivy and mistletoe garlands cross the ceiling. The Weird Sisters perform live music. Small tables replace the house tables, each seating about a dozen people. A raised platform for the champions and their partners.
Champions and Partners
Harry Potter
Partner: Parvati Patil
Harry asks Cho Chang first but she's already going with Cedric. He asks Parvati as a last resort. Spends much of the evening pining after Cho and arguing with Ron.
Cedric Diggory
Partner: Cho Chang
The perfect couple. Both look elegant and dance beautifully together. This makes Harry extremely jealous throughout the evening.
Viktor Krum
Partner: Hermione Granger
The surprise pairing of the ball. Hermione looks stunning in periwinkle blue robes. This causes Ron to become jealous and leads to their first major argument.
Fleur Delacour
Partner: Roger Davies
The beautiful Beauxbatons champion attends with the Ravenclaw Quidditch captain. They spend considerable time in the rose garden.
π Wizard Birthdays
Wizarding birthdays are celebrated with special traditions, magical cakes, and enchanted presents. Age milestones hold particular significance in the magical world.
Notable Birthday Celebrations
Harry's 11th Birthday - July 31st
Hagrid arrives at midnight to deliver Harry's Hogwarts letter and inform him he's a wizard. Hagrid bakes Harry a somewhat squashed birthday cake with green icing reading "Happee Birthdae Harry." This is the first birthday cake Harry has ever received.
Harry's 13th Birthday
Receives presents from his friends including a Broomstick Servicing Kit from Hermione and a Sneakoscope from Ron. The Dursleys give him nothing, as usual.
Harry's 17th Birthday
Comes of age in wizarding terms. The protective enchantments on Privet Drive break. Receives a watch from Mr. and Mrs. Weasley (traditional 17th birthday gift). The Death Eaters attack during his flight to the Burrow.
Nearly Headless Nick's 500th Deathday Party
Celebrated on Halloween in Harry's second year. Held in a dungeon with rotten food, black candles, and ghost musicians. Features entertainment from the Headless Hunt.
Ron's Birthday - March 1st
Often overshadowed by school events, but his family always remembers. In Year 6, he is accidentally poisoned with mead meant for Dumbledore on his birthday.
Coming of Age Traditions
In the wizarding world, witches and wizards come of age at 17. This is when they can legally perform magic outside of school, Apparate, and use defensive magic if necessary. Traditional gifts include watches passed down through families. The Trace (monitoring underage magic) breaks at 17.
π Other Wizarding Celebrations
New Year
Celebrated with magical fireworks and festivities. Students return to Hogwarts after Christmas break shortly after New Year. The Ministry often holds formal events.
Valentine's Day
In Year 2, Lockhart decorates the Great Hall with pink flowers and heart-shaped confetti. Arranges for dwarfs dressed as cupids to deliver valentines. Harry receives an embarrassing singing valentine.
Easter Holiday
Two-week break from school. Students often stay to study for exams. Easter eggs are exchanged. Hagrid sometimes sends enormous Easter eggs to Harry, Ron, and Hermione.
End-of-Term Feast
Held at the end of each school year. The Great Hall is decorated in the winning house's colors. The House Cup is awarded. Students return home on the Hogwarts Express the next day.
Weddings
Wizarding weddings feature magical elements like golden balloons, enchanted decorations, and color-changing flowers. Bill and Fleur's wedding includes a spell-raised tent and magical music before Death Eaters attack.
Funerals
Dumbledore's funeral shows wizarding funeral traditions: white marble tomb, merpeople singing, centaurs firing arrows, magical light display. Attended by the entire wizarding community.
