๐ช Overview
The Mirror of Erised is a magnificent, ancient magical mirror that shows the viewer their deepest, most desperate desire of their heart. The inscription on the frame reads "Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi" which, when reversed, says "I show not your face but your heart's desire."
โจ Appearance
The Mirror is described as:
- Magnificent and ornate design
- Reaches nearly to the ceiling
- Magnificent gold frame
- Clawed feet supporting it
- Inscription carved around the top
- Ancient and clearly very valuable
๐ญ How It Works
The Mirror of Erised shows:
- The deepest desire of whoever looks into it
- Not the future, but what the heart wants most
- Different visions for each person who looks
- The desire that consumes them more than anything
- Sometimes things the viewer doesn't consciously realize they want
Important Distinctions
What the Mirror does NOT do:
- Does not show the future or prophecies
- Does not give knowledge or truth
- Cannot tell you how to achieve your desire
- Shows only what you want, not what you need
- Reflects desire, not reality
๐จโ๐ฆโ๐ฆ Harry's Vision
When Harry looked into the Mirror:
- Saw his parents, James and Lily Potter
- They were smiling and waving at him
- Surrounded by other family members he'd never known
- His deepest desire was to have his family back
- Returned multiple nights to see them again
- Nearly became obsessed with the Mirror
Dumbledore's Intervention
Dumbledore warned Harry that:
- The Mirror shows only desire, not truth
- Men have wasted away before it
- It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live
- He would be moving the Mirror
- Harry shouldn't go looking for it again
๐งฆ Dumbledore's Desire
When asked what he sees, Dumbledore claimed:
- "I see myself holding a pair of thick, woolen socks"
- This was likely a lie or deflection
- Dumbledore later revealed he saw his family alive and whole
- Saw Ariana alive, his brother Aberforth reconciled
- His parents returned
- His deepest desire was to undo his past mistakes
๐ฎ The Mirror and the Philosopher's Stone
Dumbledore used the Mirror as the final protection:
- Enchanted it to contain the Philosopher's Stone
- Only someone who wanted to FIND the Stone, not USE it, could retrieve it
- Harry wanted to find it to keep it from Voldemort
- Quirrell wanted to use it for immortality
- The Mirror gave the Stone to Harry but not to Quirrell
- Brilliant magical protection based on pure intention
The Enchantment
Dumbledore's modification meant:
- The Stone appeared in the pocket of someone who wanted to find but not use it
- Anyone wanting to use it would only see themselves using it
- Perfect protection against greed and dark intent
- Demonstrated Dumbledore's understanding of human nature
- Combined the Mirror's properties with additional magic
โ ๏ธ Dangers of the Mirror
The Mirror of Erised is dangerous because:
- People become obsessed with their visions
- Can drive viewers to madness
- Some have wasted away staring at it
- Shows impossible desires that can never be fulfilled
- Prevents people from living their actual lives
- Particularly dangerous for those with tragic losses
๐ Dumbledore's Wisdom
Dumbledore's famous advice about the Mirror:
- "It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live"
- Happiest man would see himself exactly as he is
- Shows us nothing more or less than our deepest desires
- Cannot bring back the dead or change the past
- Reality must be faced, not escaped through fantasy
๐ฎ Later Fate
After its use in protecting the Stone:
- Dumbledore moved it from Hogwarts
- Exact location remains unknown
- Too dangerous to leave accessible
- Perhaps stored in a secure location
- Or possibly destroyed to prevent future harm
โจ Magical Significance
The Mirror represents:
- Ancient, powerful magic
- Understanding of human psychology and desire
- The danger of living in fantasy rather than reality
- How our deepest wishes reveal our character
- The importance of accepting reality and moving forward
