🐕 Fluffy
Fluffy was a giant three-headed dog owned by Rubeus Hagrid, used to guard the Sorcerer's Stone during Harry's first year at Hogwarts.
🎭 Origin
Hagrid bought Fluffy from "a Greek chappie" he met in a pub. This was typical of Hagrid's impulsive acquisition of dangerous creatures. When Dumbledore needed something to guard the Stone, Hagrid loaned Fluffy for the task.
🐾 Appearance & Size
- Three heads with three sets of jaws and teeth
- Enormous size - filled an entire room
- Standing on a trapdoor in the forbidden third-floor corridor
- Massively muscled body
- Six evil-looking eyes
- Three drooling mouths full of razor-sharp teeth
🔒 Guarding the Stone
Fluffy was the first line of defense protecting the Sorcerer's Stone. He stood on a trapdoor that led to the rest of the protections:
- Anyone approaching would face immediate attack from three directions
- His size made him nearly impossible to get past by force
- His presence deterred most would-be thieves
- Even skilled wizards would struggle against him
🎵 The Musical Weakness
Fluffy's one weakness was music - any music would put him to sleep. Hagrid inadvertently revealed this to Harry, Ron, and Hermione, saying "Just play him a bit of music and he'll go straight off to sleep."
Quirrell used a magical harp to lull Fluffy to sleep when stealing the Stone. Harry, Ron, and Hermione used a flute to get past him when pursuing Snape (who they believed was the thief).
🏰 Discovery
Harry, Ron, and Hermione first encountered Fluffy when they accidentally ran into the forbidden third-floor corridor while fleeing from Filch. The traumatic encounter of nearly being eaten by three mouths at once left a strong impression. Hermione noticed the trapdoor beneath Fluffy's paws, which led them to deduce he was guarding something.
🐕 Hagrid's Pet
Hagrid's affection for Fluffy showed his characteristic love for dangerous creatures. He referred to Fluffy as sweet and misunderstood, just like his other pets. Hagrid genuinely cared for the massive dog and probably saw him as cuddly.
🏛️ After the Stone
After the Stone was destroyed, Fluffy was no longer needed as a guard. Dumbledore arranged for him to be returned to Greece, his homeland, where he would be "among friends." This suggested there were others like him or at least people/creatures who could care for him properly.
🎭 Mythological Basis
Fluffy is clearly based on Cerberus, the three-headed dog from Greek mythology who guarded the entrance to the Underworld. Like Cerberus, Fluffy guards something precious and can be bypassed with music (Orpheus famously lulled Cerberus to sleep with his lyre).
